From: Supervisor Ammiano
To: Director, Department of Recreation and Park

Requesting/Inquiring: After several delays and funding crises over the years, Rolph Playground and Potrero del Sol were to have construction completed by January 20, 2008. The summer is fast approaching and we still do not have a firm opening date, though the latest tentative date is not until August. The skate park is completed at Potrero del Sol and the skaters are very anxious to gain access to that area. Buena Vista Elementary School was the main catalyst in the improvements to Poterero del Sol Park. The school hosted all the community meetings, including the playground design, skate park design and visits from state grant officers. The school also solicited and was awarded 5 grants supporting the project. School will be out for the summer on June 13th. It is very important that the park opens before school is out, so the community can take part in the celebration. Further, due to construction at the school site, BV Childcare is using the farm on the southern border of Potrero del Sol and access to the park is vital to the feasibility of that program. Friday, May 30th or Friday, June 6th would be ideal.

Finally, it has come to our attention that only 2 recreation directors are being located to these two sites. This is not enough to cover both the club house and the skate park at Potrero del Sol. The operations department at RPD needs to come up with a plan to have recreational, custodial, and gardening staff at these sites so they may optimally serve the community.

Please explain the history and nature of delays leading up to today, and provide an action plan to ensure that the Mission-one of the least green areas of the city- is not further deprived of the use of 2 more parks for no good reason.
