Requesting/Inquiring: That research by the City of Los Angeles and other local jurisdictions be monitored on the legality, practicality, costs and benefits of an ordinance imposing handgun safety standards including, but not limited to, an indicator showing whether a round is chambered in a pistol, a magazine disconnect mechanism making it impossible for a chambered round to be fired unless the magazine is fully inserted in a pistol, low-technology mechanical locks so the handgun can be fired only by the authorized user, and high-technology mechanisms so a handgun can be fired only by an authorized user without the need to enter a combination or engage in any procedure to unlock the gun, and, taking into account the findings in Los Angeles and other jurisdictions, to draft an ordinance requiring that all handguns sold, leased or transferred in San Francisco comply with such safety standards immediately or over the next several years to accommodate developing technology.
