Decorative imageAll proposed legislation is introduced first to the Board of Supervisors and then assigned to a committee. Legislation consists primarily of ordinances and resolutions. Ordinances are a matter of public law and typically affect the citizens (e.g. an ordinance to close Jackson Street to trucks between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.), while resolutions are policy matters and generally relate to internal operations of the City (e.g. a resolution requesting all City departments to prepare for Y2000).

Thirty Day Rule: When a measure is introduced which would create or revise major City policy, the committee to which the measure is assigned shall not consider the measure until at least 30 days after the date of introduction. (from Rules of Order)
