SUPERVISOR DALY HOSTS TOWN HALL MEETING ON SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

Community meeting at neglected South of Market elementary school designed to foster new City-School District partnerships

SAN FRANCISCO  (March 28, 2001) — District 6 Supervisor Chris Daly will convene a community meeting tonight to discuss plans for a new Bessie Carmichael Elementary School, a dilapidated school in the shadows of live/work loft construction.  The meeting will include presentations by City officials, including School Board Member Dan Kelly, Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Jim Morales and Recreation and Park Department Capital Program head Gary Hoy.

Bessie Carmichael Elementary is one of San Francisco’s most rundown school sites.  One of the major reasons why Bessie Carmichael and other public schools have been neglected is because live/work developers have not had to pay their fair share of school fees.  Supervisor Daly will explore solutions with City officials, parents and other community members.
