As of the final Department of Elections vote count yesterday afternoon, we can safely and definitively declare Proposition A a significant victory for San Francisco - and a reminder that San Francisco is still the City that invests in its values.
Prop A’s Affordable Housing Bond garnered 70.14% of the March 5, 2024 primary vote, and we could not have done it without your incredible support. This victory is one that belongs to all San Franciscans, and truly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to affordable housing for our teachers, first responders, artists, and working families. A 2/3 vote threshold is a tough hill to climb, but we have been reminded what the City can accomplish when we work together and put people before politics. This bond will provide our critical local funding commitment to meet our Housing Element goal of building more than 80,000 units of affordable housing by 2031.
I am also proud that the $30 million that we dedicated in the bond to housing women escaping street violence, domestic abuse and sexual exploitation is ready to be spent, and will go toward worthy projects. Congratulations to the Women’s Housing Coalition who fought so hard for this!
San Franciscans have sent a clear and inspiring message: affordable housing is transformative, and it is essential infrastructure worth investing in. The groundwork we laid with Prop A bodes very well for a November attempt to rally the region around a bold vision for affordable housing that allows our seniors to safely age in place, our workers to thrive and our families to grow.
Thank you to the broad coalition of private market-rate developers and non-profit affordable housing developers of the Council of Community Housing Organizations (CCHO), as well as our tenant advocates and labor organizations, who all banded together to get our message out. And thank you to the voters of San Francisco! We did it!
See you in the neighborhood,
Aaron
