A Message From Supervisor Ahsha Safaí:
I'm thrilled to send my warmest regards to you as we celebrate the Iranian New Year, Nowruz. This year, Nowruz commenced on Tuesday, March 19, and will continue for the next 13 days.
I'm also excited to announce my participation alongside emcees Hooman Khalili and journalist Yasmin Khorram at the 18th Annual 1403 Nowruz Gala Celebration hosted at City Hall. This gala is one of the most significant Nowruz gatherings in San Francisco, showcasing and honoring our vibrant culture and community in the Bay Area. The fundraiser gala proudly supports the local nonprofit Persian Women in Tech.
As always, my office is available by email: safaistaff@sfgov.org or by phone 415-554-6975 (leave a message and we will call you back). Please note - if you miss my weekly newsletter, you may find it later the Board of Supervisor’s website. Click HERE to read past newsletters.
Wishing you and your families a year filled with health, happiness, and success. Happy Nowruz!

Reviving Program to Bring Homeless Individuals Back to Their Loved Ones
The Board of Supervisors approved my proposed ordinance to bring back the City's Homeward Bound Initiative. This program offers travel and relocation support to homeless individuals in San Francisco.
The ordinance incorporates the program into the City's Administrative Code, establishing clear criteria for eligibility and oversight through mandated reporting. It also marks a significant expansion of the program, reaching out to residents in permanent supportive housing and those in city-run shelters, not just people living on the streets. It's hard to fathom that we weren't engaging families and individuals in our shelters, but now we can give them the opportunity to return to their loved ones.
The current administration almost let this program die under layers of bureaucracy. In the first few years of the program under former Mayor Gavin Newsom, we reunited 11,000 people with their families, but in the past few years, we're barely assisted 300 individuals a year.
With these changes, I believe that Homeward Bound will make a significant impact in helping individuals transition out of homelessness and reunite with their loved ones.

Women's History Month and Nowruz Recognition
In honor of Women's History Month and Nowruz, I was proud to recognize Zeinab Amiri, an amazing community leader who has been dedicated to creating spaces for children and families to celebrate and share their Persian cultural traditions throughout San Francisco.
I am grateful for Zeinab's commitment to encouraging cultural exchange, uplifting the Persian community, and promoting the beauty of our diversity, especially as communities continue to fight back against dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric.
Thank you, Zeinab!

Supporting our Frontline Workers
In support of our nurses and frontline workers, I called a hearing for transparency and accountability from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center regarding its proposed hospital mergers. The acquisition of St. Mary's Medical Center and Saint Francis Memorial Hospital has raised significant questions and concerns about the city's healthcare future, especially for vulnerable groups.
Members of the California Nurses Association rallied on the steps of San Francisco City Hall to share their concerns about UCSF's plans for critical services and patient access at St. Mary's Medical Center and Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. Considering UCSF's essential role in San Francisco's healthcare network, it's crucial for all employees, staff, patients, and the public to understand the implications of this merger.
During the hearing, UCSF representatives confirmed that the merger would not reduce the number of employees, staff, or patient services.
You can view their presentation HERE.
