Protecting Our Firefighters
Â
It's shocking and heart-wrenching to know that cancer is the greatest threat our firefighters face while on the job. These brave individuals are our lifelines, always there when we need them, yet they're battling against harmful chemicals every day that threaten their health.Â
That's why I co-sponsored the first-in-the-nation legislation this week to ban cancer-causing carcinogenic PFAS chemicals in San Franciso firefighters' protective clothing. I joined the San Francisco Firefighters Local 798 union to rally outside city hall to encourage other supervisors to support the ban.
Firefighters are repeatedly exposed to numerous toxic substances related to everyday emergency responses. Recent studies have shown that all three layers of firefighter turnout gear contain Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), a class of fluorinated chemicals known as "forever chemicals" that have been linked to cancer and other serious health effects.Â
Since 2006, 300 active-duty and retired San Francisco Firefighters have lost their lives from cancer-related causes.
The ban would decisively protect the ones who protect us with new mandates to phase out cancer-causing turnout gear by June 30, 2026. This move underscores a moral obligation to safeguard the health and well-being of those who selflessly protect the community.Â

Preserving Our Historic Neighborhoods
Â
The Board of Supervisors successfully overturned Mayor London Breed's veto, enacting legislation to preserve historic areas of San Francisco. This law will specifically regulate the height and scale of developments in the northeast waterfront and Jackson Square, areas within Board President Aaron Peskin's district.
Despite Mayor Breed's resistance and her control over key planning bodies, such as the Planning Commission, this legislation reflects the community's call for conscientious urban planning. I supported this housing legislation because our communities deserve thoughtful planning.
We can increase height and density but ensure that we are conscious of the neighborhood and surrounding environment in which they are being proposed. Building luxury housing without concern for middle-income and working families is not helping all San Franciscans. That's not solving the housing crisis. We need a mix of housing developments that everyone can afford.
The Board overriding Mayor Breed's veto is a testament to our commitment to revitalizing old structures while ensuring they remain accessible and affordable for all San Franciscans. This legislation is a step towards achieving that vision towards achieving that vision.Â

SFMTA Budget Feedback Opportunities in the Month of April
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will hold community meetings to discuss its two-year budget, including potential changes to fares, fees, fines and service.
As part of this process, we are seeking feedback about Muni’s current service network – all the service out on the streets since January 2024 – which includes previous modifications to the L-Taraval bus, the 28-19th Avenue bus and the Powell-Mason Cable Car that are already in effect. Given our financial constraints, no new service changes are being proposed as part of the budget. The current service plan will be included in our Board budget discussions and will be open for public comment. Details on the current service network can be found at the
Muni Routes & Stops webpage.  Â
Meeting Dates
The meetings will be held:Â
An additional meeting with the Board of Directors may be held April 23, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall Room 400 if needed.
For more information, meeting details and free language assistance, please visit the Budget project page (SFMTA.com/Budget), call 415.646.4470.
