A Message From Supervisor Ahsha SafaÃ:
As a strong advocate for labor unions, I'm committed to honoring the remarkable life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, an influential American labor leader and civil rights activist.Â
Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), later merging it with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to form the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union.
Chavez's story resonates deeply with my own experiences as an immigrant and serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength that can be found in the face of adversity. As an immigrant from a working family, I'm passionate about supporting labor unions. That's why I'm honored to celebrate the legacy of Cesar Chavez, who fought tirelessly for workers' rights.
Cesar Chavez Day, a local group, sponsors an annual parade and festival, a significant event that pays homage to his contributions. This year, the events will take place this Saturday, April 13, with festivities beginning at 11AM at Dolores Park on 19th Street.
Join us in acknowledging this pivotal figure who played a vital role in strengthening unions across California and the nation.
For festival details and lineup, visit cesarchavezday.org/.
As always, my office is available by email: safaistaff@sfgov.org or by phone 415-554-6975 (leave a message and we will call you back).  Please note - if you miss my weekly newsletter, you may find it later the Board of Supervisor’s website. Click HERE to read past newsletters.Â
Sincerely,
Supervisor Ahsha SafaiÂ

Ending Gun Violence
Â
In solidarity with Moms Demand Action, I remain firm in our shared commitment to ensuring public safety and preventing gun violence in our communities. I joined Moms Demand Action at City Hall rally this week to emphasize the urgent need for responsible gun laws and closing loopholes endangering families.Â
Moms Demand Action's tireless efforts to pass Senate Bill 2 (SB 2)Â reflect a vital step forward in strengthening California's gun safety laws. This led California legislators to broaden restrictions on where guns can be carried and by whom to increase public safety. SB 2 aims to tighten the process for obtaining a concealed carry permit, including more rigorous background checks and increased training requirements.
The bill raises the minimum age for a carry permit to 21 and doubles training hours for both new and renewing applicants. It designates certain places where guns are prohibited, such as government buildings, courts, churches, and school grounds, including parking lots.
Previously, carrying a concealed firearm into a business was allowed unless prohibited by a sign. SB 2 now restricts this to businesses explicitly permitting concealed carry. The law also specifies individuals ineligible for a carry license, including those deemed a danger to themselves or others.
This legislation represents a balanced approach to safeguarding public spaces from firearm threats. Despite legal challenges, we must persist in our efforts for safer communities by supporting bills like SB 2 and continuing to advocate for sensible gun regulations that prioritize everyone's right to safety.

Cayuga Avenue Project Update
Â
SFMTA staff will provide updates on the Slow Street Cayuga project at the upcoming New Mission Terrace Improvement Association monthly meeting. The Cayuga Avenue Slow Street spans 1.7 miles, connecting Cayuga Terrace, Excelsior, and Mission Terrace neighborhoods from Rousseau Street to Naglee Avenue. This route is vital for families and serves as a key link to Cayuga Playground and Balboa High School.
The meeting will take place on Monday, April 15th, at 7PM in the Ingleside Police Station Community Room.Â
Since 2019, my office has been collaborating with community members and SFMTA to develop and enact plans for enhancing active transportation along Cayuga Avenue. This initiative was prompted by the community's recognition of the necessity for traffic calming measures, particularly the installation of speed humps in front of Balboa High School.
The project design entails various features such as delineator signs, pavement markings, identification signs, a median diverter at Cayuga Avenue and Geneva Avenue, new marked crosswalks, and traffic calming elements like speed cushions.
More details about the project can be found, here.

Improving Street Safety
Â
Sideshows, involving risky stunts and donuts by drivers on public streets, are a growing concern in San Francisco. To address this issue, my office collaborated with SFMTA to implement effective measures. SFMTA has installed new rubber speed bumps at three intersections in our district:

- Mission Street and Persia Street
- Sadowa Street and Plymouth Avenue
- Alemany Boulevard and Geneva Avenue
Since they are easily transportable, SFMTA can strategically relocate them as sideshow hotspots change. We look forward to combatting the surge in sideshows while minimizing the impact on regular traffic flow and ensuring the safety of our District 11 residents.

SFMTA Budget Feedback Opportunities in the Month of April
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will hold community meetings to discuss its two-year budget, including potential changes to fares, fees, fines and service.
As part of this process, we are seeking feedback about Muni’s current service network – all the service out on the streets since January 2024 – which includes previous modifications to the L-Taraval bus, the 28-19th Avenue bus and the Powell-Mason Cable Car that are already in effect. Given our financial constraints, no new service changes are being proposed as part of the budget. The current service plan will be included in our Board budget discussions and will be open for public comment. Details on the current service network can be found at the Muni Routes & Stops webpage.  Â
Meeting Dates
The meetings will be held:Â
An additional meeting with the Board of Directors may be held April 23, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall Room 400 if needed.
For more information, meeting details and free language assistance, please visit the Budget project page (SFMTA.com/Budget), call 415.646.4470.
