A Message From The Supervisor:
Tomorrow, Friday, September 15, we will celebrate "GRITO DE INDEPENDENCIA DE MÉXICO" in Civic Center Plaza from 3:00-8:00PM. For background, the beginning of the independence movement began in the early hours of September 16th 1810, when the priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called the town of Dolores to rise against the Spanish Crown by summoning them all through the ringing of the church bells of his parish and eloquently crying out loud the reasons to fight for independence. This event is known as “El Grito”. All over the globe, Mexican consulates and embassies hold their own ceremony. It should be noted that they are the only officials of the Mexican federal government authorized to preside over this official civic ceremony. Join the Consul General of Mexico in San Francisco, Remedios Gómez Arnau, the Mexican Patriotic Committee, the City of San Francisco for this historic and unique celebration!
Next, I'd like to highlight that affordable apartments are now available for application at 4840 Mission Street. The new development has been years in the making and I am so happy to see if nearly finished. Please click HERE to learn more about the requirements to apply and find more information. Applications are due by September 28, 2023.
In addition, I am excited to have been instrumental to the success of the Student Success Fund ballot measure that secures significant additional resources for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) to focus on achieving grade-level success in core academic subjects and enhancing the social-emotional well-being of all SFUSD students. Integral to this work is the Student Success Fund Advisory Council (SSFAC), which is NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS for ‘passionate individuals to actively contribute to the formation, growth, and development of the Student Success Fund. Lastly, I want to remind everyone to come out to Jerry Garcia Amphitheatre in McLaren Park this Saturday, September 16 from 2:00-6:00PM for Due South ! Due South is a free concert series made possible by the City and County of San Francisco, my office and SF Parks Alliance. We'll have amazing acts this weekend featuring Y La Bamba, Marinero, and Loco Bloco. Hope to see you there!

I was honored to attend the graduation of the 13th and 14th recruit class of SF Park Rangers - I’ve been pushing for more presence at our parks and fought for expansion of Rangers in the last few City Budget cycles. I am happy to see a class of Park Rangers graduate!

The Student Success Fund provides vital additional resources for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), with a dual focus: achieving grade-level success in core academic subjects, and enhancing the social and emotional well-being of all SFUSD students. The Fund - which was approved by San Francisco voters in November 2022 and is administered by DCYF - creates the opportunity for schools to have sustained, robust, and targeted funding to address longstanding systemic and societal inequities in public education.
The Student Success Fund Advisory Council (SSFAC) is a unique opportunity for passionate individuals to actively contribute to the formation, growth, and development of the Student Success Fund. The SSFAC will serve as a platform for fostering collaboration, sharing diverse perspectives, and providing valuable insights to shape the future of this initiative.
In order to ensure that key stakeholders' perspectives are represented, the SSFAC’s composition will include five appointed seats, and eight at large seats that will be filled through an application process.
Appointed Seats:
- Two (2) Youth representatives appointed by youth currently serving on the San Francisco Youth Commission and the SFUSD Student Advisory Council
- One (1) Principal representative appointed by the United Administrators of San Francisco (UASF)
- One (1) Educator representative appointed by the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF)
- One (1) Community School Coordinator representative appointed by SEIU-Local 1021
At Large Seats Filled through Application Process. This week, the Student Success Fund Executive Committee adjusted the allocation of At Large seats: two At Large Family Representative Seats have been added:
- Four (4) Family Representatives: Open to any family member of a current SFUSD student.
- One (1) Beacon Director: Open to any current Beacon Director in SF.
- One (1) Community Partner Representative: Open to any Community Based Organization (CBO) partner with relevant expertise and experience.
- One (1) School Site Service Provider Representative: Open to a CBO Partner providing school-based programs or services on-site.
- One (1) Subject Matter Expert representative (SME): Open to any consultant, technical assistance provider, researcher and/or practitioner with expertise in Community Schools Implementation.
All At Large Seat applications will be reviewed, and selection for these inaugural one-year term seats will be announced in November 2023.
Applications for all SSFAC At Large Seats
are due by Saturday, September 30, at 5pm. Please visit the Student Success Fund page on the DCYF website to access the SSFAC application, and a guidance document for applicants. Click HERE to learn more.
