The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Announces Second Round Of Corridors To Be Included In Its Slow Streets Program And District 11's Excelsior Is Included

This week, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (S.F.M.T.A.) announced its second round of streets to be included in its Slow Streets program.

The Slow Streets program aims to limit through traffic on certain residential streets and allows for them to be used as more as shared space for foot and bicycle traffic.

Slow Streets are one element of the city’s efforts to provide physical distancing as people make essential trips. They create more space for those traveling on foot or by bicycle while still making sure people who live on the streets, and emergency vehicles have full access. Signage restricts through vehicle traffic, and S.F.M.T.A. has worked with navigation map providers to re-route through traffic through these corridors on their apps.

Here is the latest list announcing the newest Slow Streets corridors:

  • 20th Street, from Valencia to Potrero
  • 23rd Avenue, from Lake to Cabrillo
  • Chenery, from Elk to Brompton
  • Excelsior, from London to Prague
  • Golden Gate Avenue, from Masonic to Divisadero
  • Jarboe, from Moultrie to Peralta
  • Lane, from 3rd Street to Oakdale
  • Lombard, from Jones to Stockton
  • Mariposa, from Kansas to Texas
  • Sanchez, from 23rd to 30th
  • Shotwell, from 14th Street to Cesar Chavez
  • Somerset, from Silver to Woolsey
  • Stockton, from Bay to Lombard

Getting Tested For COVID-19 In San Francisco And This Week's Announcement Of Three New Testing Sites For Underseved Communities

Who Can Get Tested?

1. If you are an essential or frontline worker serving the community of San Francisco, you can be tested at any time. You do not need to be experiencing symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. Essential workers include those who leave their homes to do their job and cannot maintain social distance or who interact with the public.

2. If you are an adult living in San Francisco, you are eligible to be tested if you are experiencing a symptom(s) of COVID-19 and/or you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the past 14 days. COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of smell, chills, body aches, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, runny nose, and congestion.

You do not need a doctor's note to schedule a test, and you will not be charged for the test. The sites welcome those who are uninsured or who have barriers to healthcare. If you have health insurance, you will be asked to provide that information.

This week, Mayor London Breed also announced the creation of three new COVID-19 testing opportunities in San Francisco, including the City's first mobile testing site.

Specifically, the City is launching its first mobile site initially stationed in the Tenderloin (District 6); the second site will be at City College (for District 11, serving the 94112 area), and another in Hunters View (District 10).

These expanded testing opportunities are part of the City's efforts to reach communities that are affected by disparities in the spread of the coronavirus and provide additional testing resources in areas of the City that do not have as may testing options, and, combined, these new sites will increase the city's capacity to conduct over 500 additional COVID-19 tests per day.

California Governor Gavin Newsom Issues New COVID-19 Executive Order

On Tuesday, May 19, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order addressing a number of issues in response to COVID-19. Details below.

Specifically, the executive order helps ease the strain on domestic-violence service providers by waiving the 10 percent cash or in-kind matching requirements for state grants awarded to these organizations.

The executive order also waives the deadline to verify grade point average and waives certain certification requirements and selective service registration verification for Cal Grant applicants.

The executive order also suspends programmatic deadlines for entities that receive funding from the Energy Commission for the development and deployment of new technologies that support the State’s clean energy and decarbonization goals.

Lastly, the executive order extends the time frame for local governments to submit claims for reimbursement to the State Controller’s Office.
