California Update

Today, Monday, August 24, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom gave an update on our two ongoing crises – coronavirus and, now, wildfires. See below for a summary of each.

Coronavirus

The Governor reported that the seven-day positivity rate for California is 5.7% and that, overall, hospitalizations dropped by 20% over the past two weeks. The Governor also noted that a few more counties were removed from the COVID-19 watch list (e.g., Orange, San Diego, and Napa counties were recently removed but 38 of the 58 counties remain, including San Francisco). Recall, the California Department of Public Health created a watch list of counties that are being monitored for worsening COVID-19 trends.

Specifically, the California Department of Public Health reported the following, as of Sunday, August 23, 2020:

•    California has 663,669 confirmed cases to date. Numbers may not represent true day-over-day change as reporting of test results can be delayed.

•    There were 6,777 newly recorded confirmed cases Saturday. Numbers do not represent true day-over-day change as these results include cases from prior to yesterday.

•    The 7-day positivity rate is 5.7% and the 14-day positivity rate is 6.4%.

•    There have been 10,541,031 tests conducted in California. This represents an increase of 104,679 over the prior 24-hour reporting period.

•    As case numbers continue to rise in California, the total number of individuals who will have serious outcomes will also increase. There have been 12,134 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Wildfires

Today, during his press conference, the Governor noted that we have had 7,002 fires thus far and that these fires have burned 1.4 million acres (~1.2 million acres were burned this past week alone), he contrasted this with what California’s reality looked this past year.

This year, we have had more fires (7,002 so far, this past year there were 4,292), and this past year the 4,292 fires burned less (56,000) acres too. The Governor also shared that there is an estimated 12,000 structures that have been damaged or destroyed by this year’s fires, and, unfortunately, he also confirmed that seven (7) people lost their lives; the District 11 office sends our condolences to the families of these individuals whose lives have been cut short by these wildfires and the coronavirus.

Lastly, please note that the Governor did declare a statewide emergency over the hundreds of fires burning in California this past week, this declaration allowed for the federal government to provide much-needed federal disaster assistance.

TODAY: Registration For D.C.Y.F.'s Learning Hubs Begins!

This past week, it was announced that D.C.Y.F. and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, in partnership with community-based agencies and other City departments, were planning the implementation of Community Learning Hubs. These hubs are a citywide, neighborhood-based strategy to support children, youth, and families during the school year.

The Hubs will provide support for students who are utilizing S.F.U.S.D.’s Distance Learning Curriculum, and will prioritize children and youth with the highest need.

The City will utilize a focused enrollment model for the Community Learning Hubs in order to serve children who have the absolute highest level of needs. The first wave of focused outreach will only be open to the following groups: HOPE SF, public housing and SRO residents; homeless youth; foster care youth; English language learners; and low-income families that are African American, Latinx, Pacific Islander and Asian.

Higher enrollment priority will be given to applicants who are multi-system involved, who indicate they have no internet access, and who do not have digital learning devices.
