California Update: COVID-19, Wildfires, and Great Plates Program Extended
a. COVID-19
As of today, September 14, 2020, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed 757,778 cases to date. On Saturday, September 12, 2020, there were 4,6265 newly recorded confirmed cases. Also, since the beginning of the coronavirus there have been 14,385 COVID-19 deaths in California.

b. Wildfires
The latest update as of today – Monday, September 14, 2020 – is as follows:
There are nearly 16,500 firefighters continuing to work to gain containment on the 28 major wildfires across California;
Since August 15, 2020, the date that California’s fire activity elevated, here have been 24 fatalities and over 4,200 structures destroyed.
Since the beginning of 2020, wildfires have burned over 3.2 million acres in California, that is larger than the State of Connecticut.

c. Great Plates Delivered: Home Meals For Seniors Extended
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA ) Public Assistance (PA) program has authorized an extension for the Great Plates Delivered program to October 9, 2020.
1. The Great Plates Delivered program has two purposes: (1) Help seniors and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 to stay home and stay healthy by delivering three nutritious meals a day, and
2. Provide essential economic stimulus to local businesses struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 crisis.
How does the program work?
Local administrators partner with multiple local Restaurants & Food Providers to deliver three (3) nutritious daily meals to qualified individuals enrolled in the program. Each community conducts outreach to known senior centers and senior populations to enroll qualified individuals in need. The program is locally managed to ensure needs of the diverse communities within California are addressed individually.
What are the qualifications?
Individuals who are 65 or older, or 60-64 and at high-risk as defined by the CDC, including:
(1) Individuals who are COVID-19 positive (as documented by a state/local public health official or medical health professional);
(2) individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 (as documented by a state/local public health official or medical health professional), or individuals with an underlying condition;
(3) individuals must live alone or with one other program-eligible adult;
(4) participants must not be currently receiving assistance from other state or federal nutrition assistance programs;
(5) participants must earn no more than 600% of the federal poverty limit;
(6) individuals must affirm an inability to prepare or obtain meals.

Mayor London Breed Announces Launch Of Community Hubs Initiative And That Her Annual Backpack Giveaway Will Be Providing 3,000 Backpacks With School Supplies To San Francisco Students
Today, Mayor London N. Breed, along with representatives from the Departments of Recreation and Park as well as that of the Children, Youth, and Their Families, announced the launching of the Community Hubs Initiative. There will be 45 Community Hubs, citywide, and all of them opened their doors today to approximately 800 children and youth (K-6th grade).
The City will continue to roll-out the Community Hubs Initiative over the coming weeks and the goal is to have over 100 Hub Sites by mid-November, once that is completed there will be approximately 3,000 students with full-day, in-person programming and distance learning support.

San Francisco Public Works Announces Its 3 Finalists For the City’s New Trash Cans That Will Replace The Existing 3,000+ Green Metal Trash Cans
This past Friday – September 11, 2020 -- Public Works, in collaboration with the industrial designers at the Institute for Creative Integration (ICI), announced the three final design concepts for the City’s new public trash cans. The Department is asking for the public to help. This is important because whatever design is selected will replace the an estimated more than 3,000 existing green trash cans located throughout the city.
The three finalists have been dubbed: “Soft Square”, “Salt and Pepper”, and “Slim Silhouette,” the existing trash cans are made of green concrete and metal.
