Supervisor Safai in Partnership with Mayor London Breed and Chief Bill Scott Introduce Legislation to Prohibit Sideshows
Supervisor Ahsha Safai introduced legislation on Tuesday at the Board of Supervisors meeting that would amend the police code and result in string penalties for individuals engaging in sideshows, including the impounding of vehicles. This new legislation, in conjunction with current laws that enable the arrest of drivers in illegal sideshows, will work to eliminate the dangers of these reckless events in San Francisco communities.
“For too long our neighborhoods have been plagued by these dangerous events,” said Supervisor Ahsha Safai, “ I am glad to work in partnership with Mayor Breed and Chief Bill Scott to introduce legislation that will impose stricter penalties on these illegal events and impound vehicles that are involved. We need to send a message that these types of events will no longer be tolerated in our community. It is our responsibility to keep our communities safe.”
“Sideshows are dangerous and will not be tolerated anywhere in our City,” said Mayor London Breed, “They create risks for innocent drivers on the road, spectators, participants, and residents who are trying to live and work in our communities. I want to recognize Supervisor Safai for working to find legislative solutions to strengthen our local impound requirements for drivers of vehicles participating in these sideshows, and for bringing attention to this important issue.”
The San Francisco Police Department is often limited in their ability to stop these events from occurring once they have begun, as it is a public safety hazard for the spectators and police officers when these vehicles are driving and performing high speed stunts. Often the only thing officers can do is to redirect traffic and make sure bystanders are protected. The legislation introduced by Supervisor Safai allows the San Francisco Police Department to provide concrete and monetary penalties for those engaging in these reckless activities.
