December 20, 2020
A Message From The Supervisor:
This past Tuesday, December 15, 2020, the Board of Supervisors engaged in a heated debate on the topic of reopening the San Francisco public schools for in-person learning. As one of the initial co-sponsors to Supervisor Sandra Fewer’s resolution, "Urging a Comprehensive Return to School Plan" for all students, I fully support the spirit of this resolution. Board President Norman Yee has scheduled a Special Board meeting this Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 10am. This meeting will allow San Francisco parents, educators and public health advocates to share their feedback on a plan to reopen public schools. The meeting is open to the public and will be available on SFGovTV. For more information about Tuesday’s Meeting, please click HERE .
In addition, today, Friday, December 18, 2020, Mayor London Breed released a statement supporting reopening of SFUSD schools, please click HERE to read more.
As a parent of two school age children in SFUSD, I understand the need to re-open in-person learning under safety guidelines set by San Francisco Department of Public Health Department (SFDPH). I understand these are difficult decisions. However, there is strong consensus amongst public health experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci and CDC Director Robert Redfield, that schools can operate in-person learning in a safe and responsible manner.
These are tough, unprecedented times for our children and families and there should be no higher priority than re-opening our schools safely - for our kids, our educators, and parents. As your Supervisor, I am advocating for a plan to safely re-open in-person learning and encouraging both educators and families to stay at the table throughout this whole process. I am prepared to help in any way I can.
Although our City Hall Office is closed to the public due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are still here to serve you. We are available by email: safaistaff@sfgov.org or by phone 415-554-6976 (leave a message and we will call you back). You can also check for updates on my Twitter , Instagram, and Facebook. Stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Supervisor Ahsha Safai

COVID-19 Updates
On Thursday, December 17, 2020, the Bay Area Region, consisting of ten counties, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa , Solano, Sonoma, Napa, Marin, and Santa Cruz, triggered California's Regional Stay at Home Order as COVID-19 cases continue to surge. The Bay Area region's ICU bed capacity is currently 12.8% while the Greater Sacramento region is 14.5%, and Northern California is 21%. As for San Joaquin Valley and Southern California, these two regions are at capacity with no available ICU beds.
With these grim numbers, Mayor London N. Breed and Director of Health, Dr. Grant Colfax, announced a public health order that places a mandatory quarantine of 10 days on anyone traveling, moving, or returning to San Francisco from anywhere outside the Bay Area. Limited exceptions apply to people who are traveling for certain critical activities. The new order also strongly discourages any non-essential travel within the 10-county Bay Area region.
