Happy Year of the Ox! Lunar New Year is celebrated on February 12 this year, and while I will miss the banquets and Chinese New Year parade, I urge you and your loved ones to please stay safe and celebrate this holiday virtually and avoid gathering indoors.

You can check out the Chinese Historical Society of America’s virtual events to celebrate the Lunar New Year! These include virtual tours of SF’s Chinatown to kids programs, available here.

The Year of the Rat was challenging, but by staying vigilant with proper mask wearing, keeping physical distance, proper handwashing, and getting vaccinated when it’s time to do so, we can have a brighter Year of the Ox!

Cliff House Updates

If you haven’t already seen the news, the National Park Service announced earlier this week that our iconic Cliff House will reopen again soon! I’m excited to announce a temporary vendor will likely move into the Cliff House this spring, as the National Park Service has announced they are working on a short-term vendor to take residency in the Cliff House, while they work to identify a long-term tenant.

Thank you to my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors for unanimously supporting my resolution urging this action, and I look forward to partnering with the San Francisco Travel Association, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, and the Golden Gate Restaurant Association to support and revitalize the Cliff House as we recover from the pandemic.

Working Families Relief Program

Last Tuesday, I introduced the Working Families Relief Program to provide additional relief for working families, and in particular, working mothers. I’ve requested the City Attorney to draft legislation to expand fee waivers to provide summer camp to San Francisco working families, and to expand camp capacity citywide to ensure all kids that want to attend summer camp will have the opportunity to do so. Thank you to the Recreation and Parks Department and the Department of Children, Youth & Their Families for their hard work serving kids in Community Hubs the last 10 months, and I thank them in advance for their partnership.

As we move to recover from the pandemic in the coming months, we need to remove any additional burdens working families are facing. Summer camp will help our children develop the necessary social and developmental skills, and improve their mental health. It will also improve their quality time with their families at home. It has always been a fight for San Francisco’s working families to enroll their children in quality programs, and summer will be here before we know it.

In addition, I am asking the Department on the Status of Women to produce a report on the disparate impact that loss of employment has had on working women. Taken together, these two items will better direct City resources to direct relief for working families most in need of support during our pandemic recovery.

While families are struggling to put food on the table, it’s time for the City to step in, work together, and figure out a program that removes barriers on the road to recovery.

Renovated Golden Gate Park Dog Training Area Opens

I’m also excited to announce that the new Golden Gate Park Dog Training Area is now open! The new dog park features improved landscaping and accessibility and plenty of space for our furry friends to run around in. Thank you Assemblymember Phil Ting and former Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer for helping secure the funding to renovate the dog training area and thank you San Francisco Recreation and Park Department for constructing this amazing new park!

Introducing the D1 Team!

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all for your support and your trust in us to represent the Richmond District at City Hall. I also want to introduce to you our team that will be helping our tenants and homeowners with fixed incomes stay housed, helping our small businesses stay open, and making sure our city services are equitable and provided to all San Franciscans.

Ian Fregosi, Legislative Aide

Ian is a California native and graduate of San Francisco State University with a BA in Sociology. He has been serving District 1 as a Legislative Aide for 3 years now, primarily focusing on land use and housing policy. Prior to working for Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer, Ian was the Campaign Manager for Evolve California, a San Francisco based advocacy organization working to make corporations pay their fair share of taxes. In his free time when there isn’t a pandemic going on, Ian likes to play baseball and softball. Ian’s issue areas include land use, housing, state legislation, small businesses and staffing Rules Committee. You can reach him at Ian.Fregosi@sfgov.org.

Kelly Groth, Legislative Aide

Kelly was born and raised in the Bay Area and most recently managed Connie Chan's campaign for Supervisor. Previously she worked as a policy advisor and budget manager at NextGen America. Kelly holds a BA in Philosophy from San Francisco State University, and an MA in environmental sustainability from the University of Oregon. She lives in the Inner Sunset with her cat and many plants, and enjoys biking and hiking through San Francisco in her free time. Kelly’s issue areas include the environment, transportation and pedestrian safety, parks and open space, public works, the city’s budget and staffing the Transit Authority. Frances Hsieh, Legislative Aide

Frances Hsieh is a San Francisco native, born and raised in the Richmond District. She has over 20 years of legislative and policy advocacy experience at the local and state level. Most recently she was a legislative aide for Board President Norman Yee, serving the constituents of District 7. Frances is currently sheltering in place, wearing a mask, and washing her hands incessantly in the Excelsior with her wife, 2 adult children, and two cats. Frances’s issue areas include Labor, public safety, public health, education, District 1 budget allocations, and staffing Government Audit & Oversight Committee. Angelina Yu, Administrative Aide

Angelina has worked with the District 1 Office for over four years focusing on strengthening community infrastructure and resilience. She has a deep appreciation for the people that power the Richmond District -- the frontline staff who are keeping essential services accessible for seniors and families, the merchants who have invested their heart and soul in building cherished small businesses, and our neighbors who are doing #OneRichmond things to support others where and how they can. Angelina is a San Francisco native, an aspiring SF history-buff, an alumnus of Washington High School (Go Eagles!) and is raising an adventurous toddler with her husband in the Outer Richmond. Her work issues include ensuring that city resources work for constituents, and supporting businesses in navigating the roadmap to reopening. Angelina can be reached at Angelina.Yu@sfgov.org.

This Valentine’s Day, show your neighbors some love and join Richmond District Rising and Race to Zero Waste for a beach clean up and donation drive ! On Sunday, February 14, meet at stairwell 4 at Ocean Beach at 10 am for the clean up or to drop off gently used goods. COVID-19 Vaccination Update

A safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, coupled with continued preventative measures, are our best tools to end the COVID-19 pandemic and safely reopen San Francisco. This is why I co-sponsored Supervisor Matt Haney’s legislation calling on the Department of Public Health (DPH) to submit a plan to vaccinate all San Franciscans in a timely and effective manner. We must also ensure our vaccines are distributed equitably across the city, which is why I continue to advocate for vaccination sites in the Richmond. Thank you to the Department of Emergency Management and DPH for being so responsive to our requests for cultural competency and vaccination sites on the westside.

If you are eligible and you want to make an appointment:
Go to the “Get Vaccinated” webpage (https://sf.gov/getvaccinated) which has information about the high-volume vaccination sites, including location, eligibility, and links to book appointments, if available. This “Get Vaccinated” page will be updated as we bring more vaccination sites online and as more sites offer appointments. Supply remains extremely limited. It is likely that the available appointments at the sites we are linking to will be fully booked shortly after making them available.

Updates on Affordable Senior Housing (4200 Geary)

The Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) wants to get more direct input from the community about use for its commercial space. They have issued a community survey in English, Chinese, and Russian to collect input for 30 days and will be reaching out widely to solicit feedback.

TNDC will publish the results of that survey in a public Request for Qualifications (RFQ). This RFQ is to solicit responses from any interested nonprofits and organizations interested in below market rate tenancy in the ground floor commercial space at 4200 Geary.

This will be published, with information on process, timing, and selection, in early March 2021.

Small Business Survey

COVID-19 and the local emergency have created unprecedented challenges for San Francisco small businesses and their workers.

The San Francisco Small Business Commission has partnered with economists from San Francisco State University to better understand your challenges so that they can best advocate for your needs. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Your answers will be anonymous and will help decision-makers enact programs and policies uniquely appropriate for small businesses.
