Supporting Working Families in Our Economy’s Recovery
Even before the pandemic, one of my top priorities was to improve the livelihood of working families, supporting a greater family friendly work culture and environment. As with many of our social challenges, the pandemic has laid bare the disparities faced by our struggling families, but it has also demonstrated that we can adapt our workplaces in ways we previously thought were not possible. Now, we are at a critical point for our long-term and equitable recovery in balancing the needs between both our workers and our employers – This is the moment for a paradigm shift for us to create an equitable and family friendly work environment for San Franciscans.
Just a few weeks ago, the Board of Supervisors passed my legislation to expand the right of workers to have flexible workplace scheduling in order to balance their caregiving responsibilities. Thank you to my colleagues for unanimously passing my legislation to overhaul and modernize this critical ordinance and to the Mayor for signing it into law!
As of March 11, 2022, San Francisco will no longer require proof of vaccines or a negative test for certain local businesses. Proof of vaccination or a negative test will no longer be required to enter businesses where food and drink is consumed, such as restaurants and bars, and where elevated breathing occurs, such as gyms and fitness studios. Businesses can decide to be more restrictive than local health guidelines and can continue to require proof of vaccination or a negative test from their staff and clients. Masks can also still be required.
Starting on April 1, San Francisco will align with the State to recommend, but not require, proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test to enter “mega events,” defined as event that gather 1,000 or more people.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health is also deploying a new mobile COVID-19 testing strategy to be able to rapidly expand or contract testing as needed and to target resources where they are needed most in neighborhoods with the highest positivity rates that have suffered the greatest impact from the pandemic. These mobile testing vans will provide services in communities most impacted by COVID-19, including the Bayview, SoMa, Civic Center, Mission, and the Tenderloin. A calendar of where the vans will be parked with dates will be available at sf.gov/gettested.
Speaking at Phil Ting's town hall -- it was good to be back in person and meet all of our constituents!
While Mayor London Breed and I have our differences, we share a pride and love for San Francisco. It was historic to join other women of color leaders and witness the history made at Mayor Breed's State of the City address.
Thank you Race to Zero Waste for hosting a great film festival! I had the honor of awarding Vince Yuen, founder of Refuse Refuse, who brings communities together and makes our public space better for the environment.
Thank you Public Works for bringing the Clean Corridors Program to District 1's Geary corridor! It was great to meet all the hardworking women who help keep our streets clean.
Last month, Jeff Hunt of Storied: SF was kind enough to host me as a guest on his podcast. Not only is Jeff an award-winning podcaster, but he’s also a District 1 constituent! Listen in here to hear about my immigration story to San Francisco, and the unique experience of growing up in Chinatown.
For Women’s History Month, I had the privilege of honoring Caina Li, who works tirelessly to serve the needs of our Chinese seniors – from meal deliveries to wellness checks, Caina does it all!

Geary Boulevard Transit and Safety Improvements
Last week, I joined SFMTA Directors Jeff Tumlin and Julie Kirschbaum to discuss the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project!
Share your feedback on Geary Boulevard's transit and safety improvements. The proposed project includes installing transit lanes, traffic signal upgrades, and other safety improvements.
Visit SFMTA’s website on the project, where you can review the block-by-block design for the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project. Then, take a brief survey about the detailed project design and provide your feedback. The survey will be open through March 31.
My priorities for Geary are to improve pedestrian safety, deliver efficient and safe transportation on the 38 Geary bus lines, and ensure our small business merchants and residents are informed of any proposed changes. I look forward to seeing the results of the SFMTA outreach conducted from this survey so our constituents can inform the future of the Geary BRT.
In coordination with Caltrans, and following the SFMTA Board of Directors’ approval of the Park Presidio Lombard Temporary HOV Lanes in April 2021, temporary high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are planned to be installed on the Park Presidio segment starting the night of Friday, April 1.
Timeline of sign installation and painting: Approximately three to six weekend nights. Work will take place on weekend nights from approximately 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. to minimize traffic impacts.
Traffic impacts: Temporary closures of lanes while crews paint the roadway.
Transit impacts: Minor transit impacts may occur due to crews working.
Once installed, these HOV lanes will be usable by passenger vehicles with two or more passengers, buses, motorcycles, and vehicles with Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decals and will help to improve the travel time and reliability of Muni and Golden Gate Transit service by keeping buses out of traffic.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) will be conducting nightwork occurring at 5140 Geary Blvd, starting March 21st to April 1st, from 7p.m. to 7a.m., excluding Saturday mornings. SFPUC crews will be scheduling a water shutdown to make water improvements. There might be noise and traffic impacts, and SFPUC apologizes for the inconvenience. For questions or complaints, call 311 or 415-554-3233 after hours.

Are you a passionate San Franciscan, ready to work with others to make our government more responsive? Do you care about improving the quality of life for everyone in our City? Then the Civil Grand Jury needs you!
Civil Grand Juries are required for every county in California. They serve as citizen “watchdog” groups to make sure local government operates efficiently, ethically, and effectively. The Civil Grand Jury conducts independent investigations of City and County departments, agencies, and officials, and writes reports with findings and recommendations of what the City should do about a particular problem.
Applications and more detailed information about the Civil Grand Jury are available here. The application deadline is May 13, 2022.
