Voter fatigue is real – San Francisco will hold a total of four elections this year. But our vote is our voice, and this November’s election is an important one.
Not only will we be voting on several state measures, including codifying abortion access, San Francisco voters will also have a say in 14 local measures and will choose candidates for elected office impacting all levels of our government. The election results from this November may very well fundamentally change the direction of San Francisco’s future in the next decade. All registered San Francisco voters will received their ballots in the mail starting the week of October 10th. You can read more about how your vote is your voice here.
This month, the FDA issued an emergency order greenlighting the new Pfizer and Modernamodified vaccine to target the omicron variant. This booster is now available for distribution and will serve as a vital tool to combatting new cases of Covid-19.
If you are due for a booster or need to start your vaccine series, you can contact your health services provider, your local pharmacy, or vaccine site. Visit the SF Department of Public Health website for more information: https://sf.gov/get-your-covid-19-booster
Monkeypox
We received encouraging news this month that the spread of the monkeypox (MXP) virus appears to be slowing down. While we are hopeful we still must be vigilant - if you are part of a high-risk population, visit the SFDPH MXP website for information about MPX including how to prevent spread in children and schools and more details on vaccines.
Around the City
Labor Day
I hope you all had a wonderful labor day, and were able to stay cool! This past month I have been honored to get out and support our local labor unions as they fight for fair and equal treatment. I was proud to stand with the California Nurses Association, Local 2 at SFO, and the United Farm Workers at rallies and picket lines to demand fair labor practices. We must do more to protect our workers and their right to unionize.
Celebrating our Neighbors
We have had some wonderful celebrations for beloved Richmond neighbors this summer.
We came together to celebrate Mr. Arnie Barros' Centennial Birthday with the SF Lawn Bowling Club.
Arnie was born and raised in Shanghai and ultimately relocated to the Inner Richmond with his family in the 1950s where he continued his love of bowling and joined the SF Lawn Bowling Club in the 1990s. SFLBC launched an annual tournament in Arnie’s name in 2017.
Also, neighborhood institution O’Keefe’s celebrated 50 years in business, and owner Annie O’Keeffe is a neighborhood gem. Congratulations to Annie and we’re so happy to see O’Keefe’s and so many other neighborhood businesses back open and thriving.
District Updates
Clement Street Art Walk
Saturday, September 3rd was the San Francisco Art Walk on Clement Street. I loved seeing neighbors, friends, and amazing artists in the District. It was a welcome reminder that the Richmond is full of compassionate, creative and vibrant community members. Let’s all get out and support our community. I hope to see you out in the District soon.
SFMTA District 1 Projects
High-Occupancy Vehicle Lanes
You have probably noticed the High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on Park Presidio from Fulton to Lake Street. These HOV lanes are part of a three year pilot project by SFMTA for Muni as well as cars with two or more passengers to help improve travel time for our residents along crucial corridors.
Geary Boulevard Improvements
In addition to the Park Presidio HOV lanes, we are seeing much needed attention to Geary Boulevard. If you would like to participate in the conversation, the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project team is seeking community members for the Geary Community Advisory Committee (CAC) . The Geary CAC advises SFMTA staff on the design and delivery of transit and safety improvements along Geary Boulevard as a part of the Geary Rapid and Geary Boulevard Improvement projects. People who live, work, visit or travel on Geary are encouraged to apply. We are also encouraging high school and college students who live or go to school along the corridor to apply to make sure this important voice is represented.
The Geary CAC meets quarterly, on the second Wednesday of every third month, to provide community guidance from project design through construction, and to make the project teams aware of community priorities and concerns. Download the Geary CAC membership packet for more information and to apply. Please submit your application by Friday, September 23, 2022. If you would like to weigh in on these or any other SFMTA matters, you can contact the SFMTA Board of Directors, or my office for comment.

Join me and Assemblymember Phil Ting for a taste of the cultural diversity of the Richmond District - we will have local performances, vendors with delicious food and mooncakes, and opportunities to connect with a number of community resources and programs. My office will have a table, come by and say hello!
Flower Piano
Flower Piano in the Botanical Gardens is one of my most favorite events of the summer. Starting September 16th through the 20th, Rec and Park is bringing back the Flower Piano to transform San Francisco Botanical Garden into the city’s own alfresco concert hall where everyone is invited to play and listen.
