Public safety has been at the forefront of San Franciscans’ minds, from the rising attacks on Asian elders in broad daylight to the brazen thefts of catalytic converters. I have been working with elected leaders and law enforcement agencies to improve public safety while still making reforms to our criminal justice system. Public safety is improved when we prioritize reforms and reduce disparities in law enforcement to deliver meaningful criminal justice. To advance this work, we need to approach public safety in our City with honest policy discussions. Â
There is no denying that people in this City are feeling less safe. We have seen a rise in targeted, violent attacks against our most vulnerable communities. In the past month, we saw three attacks against Asian elders in the Richmond District alone. This is unacceptable.
In 2022, as part of the Board’s Budget and Finance Committee, I supported an increase to the police budget to hire new police officers. My support was in direct response to the voters’ demand for the City to study police staffing, which indicated that our City indeed needs more police officers to keep up with the pace of retirement. Additionally, we need to continue to invest in resources for our police department to serve our community. This funding will go directly to bringing in five new police academy classes, and to expanded recruitment and retention initiatives. Read more in the Richmond Review.
Last week, Richmond District Police Station got a new Captain! I am so pleased to welcome Captain Chris Canning to the Richmond District! Captain Canning and I have been in regular communication and met for coffee to discuss how to better serve the public safety needs of our district. I also want to thank Captain Caltagirone for his service to the Richmond and wish him well in his new role!
Join Captain Canning and SF SAFE at the next Richmond Station SFPD Community Meeting on Tuesday, October 25th from 5:00pm - 6:00pm to discuss public safety issues and get involved! Register for the meeting below.Â

We are maintaining low levels of COVID hospitalizations in San Francisco, due to vaccines and community vigilance. The new bivalent vaccine boosters are now available for everyone 5 years and older. Get your COVID-19 vaccine and your flu vaccine now to prepare for a possible winter surge.
Monkeypox
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) today announced that the public health emergency declaration on MPX will end on October 31. MPX cases have slowed to less than one case per day and more than 27,000 San Franciscans are now vaccinated against the virus.
San Franciscans should continue to do their part by getting vaccinated against MPX if they are eligible and, critically, completing the two-dose Jynneos series; maximum protection against the virus occurs only after the vaccine series is completed.Â

What an amazing gala to celebrate our Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco. I was honored to introduce the fabulous artist, Guo Pei, and welcome her virtually to San Francisco.
