On Tuesday, December 12th, Mayor Breed is attending the Board of Supervisors' meeting for her monthly address and question time; and it is our turn to ask her a question. As we have done in the past, we want to include you in the process. If you have a question you would like me to ask the Mayor, please fill out the google form here.
In our previous question times we have asked the Mayor about how she plans to address issues around the unhoused population and neighborhood blight. This is a chance for you, District 1 residents, to have your concerns heard directly by our administration.

District Updates
Richmond Community Coalition Meeting
Last week I joined the Richmond Community Coalition meeting for their montly roundtable and report out. I am so grateful for the work of our community partners, working every day to provide access to services and support for the community.
I gave an update on the Mayor's mid-year budget cuts and how to best interact with her office to advocate for continued funding.
Self Help for the Elderly Expansion
Earlier this month I joined with the Self Help for the Elderly, Assemblymember Phil Ting, and Mayor Breed to announce the expansion of Self Help for the Elderly from Central Richmond to the Inner Richmond, creating senior housing and services and providing integrated care and support to our seniors and their families.
We were able to accomplish this expansion thanks to the AAPI Equity Fund, which we created in collaboration with citywide AAPI Community organizers and leaders. The API Equity Fund invests in projects that stablize and secure our community services. And thanks to additional funding from Assemblymember Ting, Self Help was able to make this project a reality!
Fire Safety and Extinguisher Demonstration
With winter approaching, we know that the instance of preventable fires will also rise. With that in mind, I invited San Francisco Fire Department Fire Prevention and Community Outreach Education Program Inspector, Calder Storm to join me at Self Help for the Elderly to provide a demonstration for seniors on fire prevention and provide a hands-on experience to learn how to safely use a fire extinguisher. We are in the process of planning more demonstrations. If you would like to participate, email us at ChanStaff@sfgov.org.
Traffic Safety at Presidio Middle School
My team and I have been working with Presidio Middle School to create a traffic safety plan and school crossing guard training program to strengthen pedestrian safety for students and their families. I stopped by earlier this week and met with the voluenteers and look forward to seeing the great results of this work.
Community Events
Richmond Playground
Great news, the construction on the Richmond Playground Children's Play Area is finally set to begin this week! This project includes upgrading accessibility improvements at the park entry and restrooms, new site furnishings, paving and planting, and upgrades to the park restrooms.
During construction, which is scheduled to go from now through mid-Summer, the play area, multi-purpose court and restrooms will be closed, but the tennis and basketball courts will remain open. We will keep you posted on construction process and a re-opening date!
Helipad Exercises at the VA
Be aware, if you hear a lot of helicopers this week and next, the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC) is conducting an exercise in collaboration with the San Francisco Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guardtomorrow, November 30th, from 10:00am - 1:00pm and on December 6th, from 5:00pm - 6:00pm.
The exercise will test the SFVAMC’s capabilities of providing emergency helicopter landing in support of its role as a Federal Coordinating Center with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. As part of the exercise, the helipad will be prepared and receive a helicopter. No operational or patient impacts are anticipated. This exercise is an essential part of emergency preparedness for SFVAMC’s fourth mission to support the larger community during disaster responses.
