Just like many of you, with the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), I have been switching between calm resolve and intense stress multiple times a day. Fear and anxiety during these times can feel overwhelming.
For me, I am balancing running our district and finding ways to help all San Franciscans during this COVID-19 crisis, while trying to provide structure and learning opportunities to my 7 year old. It isn’t easy.
My colleagues and I on the Board of Supervisors, the Mayor, and our public health officials continue to work tirelessly around the clock to protect San Franciscans during this difficult time.
I’m working 15 hours days, and at times I still feel like I’m not doing enough. I worry about our most vulnerable populations and our seniors. I worry if we’re doing enough to help low-income individuals during this time. I worry about our frontline workers and their families, our unhoused population, our small businesses, those living in congregate settings, the incarcerated population, and on and on.
I’m sharing this because no matter what your circumstance, I want you to understand that everyone reacts differently to stressful situations, and that is OK. I promise you that you are not alone, and that there is help out there.
If you are like me, you are weeding through emails, news, and posts related to this pandemic. We are all trying to adapt to a new way of life (professionally and personally) as our daily routines are disrupted. During this time, it's important to remember that our mental health is crucial to maintaining our overall health.
Here is a list of resources that provide useful strategies for our mental health.
I also wanted to pass on some options to help if you are feeling depressed, suffer from anxiety, mental illness, addiction, or living in a dangerous situation.
I want to thank my colleague, Supervisor Catherine Stefani, for sharing these resources. All of these services are available, free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you are feeling anxious, stressed, depressed or isolated, you can call the San Francisco Mental Health Warm Line at (855) 845-7415 or chat with them online at www.mentalhealthsf.org/peer-run-warmline.
If you are a senior who is feeling isolated due to the coronavirus, the Institute of Aging has a warm line called The Friendship Line. It operates 24 hours a day at 800-971-0016.
If you are having thoughts about harming yourself, you can call the San Francisco Suicide Prevention hotline at (415) 781-0500, and they can provide you with confidential emotional support. You can also chat online with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/chat/.
If you are co-quarantined with an abuser or are worried about having to self-isolate in a dangerous home situation, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233 or chat online at www.thehotline.org.
For those with alcohol and addiction issues, you can find help in programs like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. For confidential support from Alcoholics Anonymous, you can call their helpline at (415) 674-1821 or email them at help@aasfmarin.org. To reach Narcotics Anonymous, call (415) 610-7294.
