(Novel Coronavirus) Update: Shelter in Place in Effect
As we ramp up efforts to to limit the spread of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) in San Francisco, on Monday, March 16, the City ordered that effective at midnight, San Franciscans shall shelter in place.
This means that vulnerable populations must stay home. Everyone should stay home except to get food, care for a relative or friend, get necessary health care, or go to an essential job.
Necessary government functions & essential stores will remain open. These steps are based on the advice of public health experts to slow the spread of #COVID19. Read more about what Sheltering in Place means here. You can sign up for the City’s new alert service for official updates: text COVID19SF to 888-777. You can also call 311 for updates.
The most important thing you can do is remain home as much as possible. There is no need to rush out for food or supplies, as these stores will remain open. The Order is effective as of 12:01 am on Tuesday, March 17 (just after midnight on Monday) and is effective until April 7, 2020, or until it is extended.

While this news may feel alarming, it is a necessary step to prevent a worsening situation. The patterns of the virus around the world, and in our own state, tell us that moving right now to maximize social distancing and restrict people gathering is the best way to fight the virus and save lives.
We know that there will be a lot of questions and concerns at the beginning of this new regimen. This is a major change being taken to protect public health. Please be patient and kind to one another. Together, we will get through this, and our community’s health will be protected.
