Dear Neighbor,
Â
As the first Muslim American elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, it was my unique honor to introduce a resolution this week honoring the beginning of Ramadan and recognizing the contributions of San Francisco’s Muslim community.Â
The observance of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, in 2025 began at sunset on Friday, February 28, and will continue until the evening of Saturday, March 29. Ramadan is a month-long sacred time of fasting, reflection, and spiritual renewal for Muslims worldwide, fostering values of empathy, self-discipline, and service. With over 250,000 Muslim residents in the Bay Area, we boast one the nations most diverse and culturally blended Muslim populations.Â
Despite harmful rhetoric in recent years, our Muslim community has remained resilient, contributing to the cultural and economic vitality of our great city.Â
I’m proud to represent this community and I welcome all neighbors to join in Ramadan’s message of compassion and reflection, and continuing efforts to build a just, inclusive, and equitable society for all.

Iftars, or fast-breakings, are one of my favorite parts of Ramadan, as it brings people together over a meal. I had the pleasure of attending the TL Annual Tenderloin Community Iftars, which are hosted by Chinatown Community Development Center, Boys and Girls Club, Maram Foundation, AlSabeel Masjid Noor Al-Islam, Masjid Al-Tawheed, with support from Yemeni Mediterranean Restaurant, Fanoos Grill Restaurant, Napoli Pizza, and Outta Sight Pizza.Â
A special thank you to the individual community leaders who made this possible:Â Soumia Laktabi, Rania Bitar, Radwa Hussein, Adnan Alameri, Mike Voung, Alex Humphrey, Soha Abdou, Lily Li, Ruqayah Angeles, Diana Pang, Amran Alsaidey, and Gehad Safwat. |
In the spirit of acts of service and community, this weekend, over 100 neighbors volunteered to plant 100 trees for SF Public Works' Arbor Day: Neighborhood Beautification Day in Districts 5 and 6.

Mayor Lurie, Supervisor Dorsey and I joined residents from across the city in this major effort to make our streets greener for generations to come. This was an incredible way to build community, meet neighbors, and invest in the future of our district.
Thank you to all who joined — it's acts like these that help move our district in the right direction.
In service, |

Taste of New Orleans in San FranciscoÂ
A special thank you to The Village Project for keeping the Mardi Gras tradition alive in San Francisco! Fat Tuesday in the Fillmore is a yearly event that uplifts local artists, supports youth programs, and brings people together in the process.Â

On Friday, I joined Haight Ashbury small businesses for a merchant walk alongside our police department and Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing to check in on businesses and hear where they'd like more support from the city.
We visited some amazing businesses like Sockshop Haight Street while discussing public safety, transit, and street conditions. Thank you to Haight Ashbury Merchant Association for hosting me.

On Friday, we celebrated Azalina Day in San Francisco! I was honored to present Chef Azalina Eusope and Co-owner Tim Benson with a Certificate for Honor for being a pillar of the Tenderloin community and beacon for what’s possible.
More than just being an award winning chef, Azalina is a tireless advocate with an incredible heart. She encapsulates the Tenderloin – resiliency, empathy, and excellence. She’s truly an inspiration to us all.
If you haven't had a chance to check out her restaurant, I highly encourage it.

Win of the Week: Dustin' Right Off—Lower Haight’s Cleanup Crew Returns!
Two weeks ago, my office organized a merchant walk with Department of Public Works and Mayor Lurie to understand the challenges in the area and see how we could step in to help. One thing that came up was a recent gap in street cleaning services.

Big shoutout to Larry and Molly for also reaching out about the temporary absence of a DPW worker in Lower Haight and at the tail end of Divisadero. My office is excited to confirm that Eric from DPW is now officially on the scene, keeping things spick and span from Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 AM–7:30 PM.
If you see Eric out there keeping our streets clean, be sure to say hello! A clean street is essential, but a strong neighborhood? That’s the real sparkle we really like to see!
And since we’re dusting off the topic of tidy streets, don’t forget about the SF311 app! If you see something, be sure to say something.
File a request, snap a screenshot of the case number, and send it our way—my office is here to assist.

Don’t hesitate to reach out at MahmoodStaff@sfgov.org. We’re here to help!
Let’s work together to make District 5 a better place for all.
