District 8 Community Office Hours on August 25th at Maxfield's.

WHAT'S NEW

September brings the start of the new Legislative Term, after the August recess. The District 8 office is excited to hit the ground running in the new term!

Homelessness update: Our office is working every day to address the crisis on our streets. Here's what we've been up to lately.
  • Providing Care for the Most Vulnerable: Addressing the street mental health crisis is the moral challenge of our day. That's why I am joining Mayor London Breed in an initiative that will provide evidence-based, comprehensive services and solutions to meet the needs of nearly 4,000 people suffering from severe mental illness and substance use disorders.  By prioritizing the needs of the sickest and most vulnerable among us we can save lives and focus our resources to have the biggest impact. I appreciate Mayor Breed’s leadership in bringing this plan forward and tackling the most important issue facing my constituents and the entire city.
  • Town Hall on Meth Use in the LGBTQ Community: Meth addiction is increasing among the most vulnerable San Franciscans, especially those with underlying mental illnesses who are living on our streets. I have convened a Meth Task Force with health professionals and advocates, and this coming Monday, I am co-hosting a Town Hall on Meth Use in the LGBTQ Community  with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and co-sponsored by the Castro Country Club, Harm Reduction Coalition, HealthRIGHT360, and the SF LGBT Center. Join us at the SF LGBT Center, Rainbow Room (1800 Market Street) starting at 6:30pm today, Monday, September 9th.

Harm Reduction Center Tour: During the legislative recess, I took a tour of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation's Harm Reduction Center and even got a Narcan training. Thanks to SFAF and Senior Director of Policy and Strategy Courtney Mulhern-Pearson for all the important work you do to create pathways to improved health for San Franciscans.

Standing up to Hate: I was proud to take a trip over the hill on August 24th to support the Central Valley’s queer community in their counter-protest against anti-LGBTQ and racist demonstrations. Thank you to our star intern and Modesto native Joe Adkins for his great organizing.

James Lick Middle School Principal: I enjoyed meeting with new James Lick Middle School Principal Ruby De Tie! Looking forward to working with her and the James Lick community to support this great school. Go Bulldogs!

San Francisco Youth Commission Swearing-In Ceremony: Congratulations to the 2019-2020 San Francisco Youth Commission! Thank you to all the talented young people for your commitment to serving our city, and especially to District 8 Commissioner JoJo Ty, for your advocacy on behalf of queer youth experiencing homelessness and your leadership on the Commission. You make us all proud!

JESSICA'S CORNER

Happy September, neighbors! Jessica here, your D8 Public Safety Community Liaison with the San Francisco Police Department.

I'm often asked "How can I help keep my neighborhood safe?" One great way is to start a Neighborhood Watch. Connecting with the neighbors on your block and forming a neighborhood watch is the most effective way to reduce crime. The non-profit SAFE organization manages the Neighborhood Watch Program for the City & County of San Francisco. To learn more, or start a neighborhood watch group, visit SFSAFE online or call: (415) 673-SAFE.

IN THE NEWS

SUPERVISORS STEP UP PRESSURE ON MAYOR, DPH TO REOPEN LONG-TERM MENTAL HEALTH BEDS
Adding to political pressure on the mayor and health department officials, Supervisor Rafael Mandelman on Tuesday requested legislation to ensure that 41 long-term care beds serving patients with severe mental illness at the Zuckerberg San Francisco Hospital will be reopened. (San Francisco Examiner, Sept. 3)
TWO SF HOMES FOR ELDERLY AND HOMELESS PLAN TO CLOSE AMID RISING COSTS
“Residential care facilities, or board-and-care homes, have for decades, provided stable housing to our vulnerable population of seniors and people with disabilities,” Mandelman said at Tuesday’s meeting. “This is an urgently needed stopgap measure to preserve a crucial component of our city’s housing stock for our vulnerable, sick and elderly residents.” (San Francisco Chronicle, Sept. 3)
CRITICS BLAST CITY'S PLAN TO SHUFFLE MENTAL HEALTH BEDS AT SF GENERAL HOSPITAL
Supervisor Rafael Mandelman said he understands the city needs to be flexible and shuffle around beds to meet demand whenever possible. But, he said, staffing challenges, must be overcome.“Why isn’t the answer to fix up the hiring process and fill up the beds?” he said. (San Francisco Chronicle, August 21)
WITH TIME TO ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE RUNNING OUT, SAN FRANCISCANS GET DOWN TO BUSINESS

“Folks, climate change isn’t coming, it’s already here,” San Francisco District Supervisor 8 Rafael Mandelman said. “An emergency situation calls for an emergency response, and this hearing should help us better understand how our city can do its part to achieve the deep emissions [greenhouse gas] reductions without which humans will not survive.” (El Tecolote, August 15)
FOR 1ST TIME, CANNABIS SALES AT SAN FRANCISCO'S OUTSIDE LANDS FESTIVAL
"San Francisco is a city that has long embraced community festivals and gatherings, as well as the cannabis industry," Mandelman said in a statement. "Outside Lands is an exciting opportunity for us to host our first event with legal cannabis sales and consumption and do so in a way that supports local businesses and puts public safety first." (KTVU, August 8)
