¡Feliz Octubre, District 7!
This month, we celebrate Latino Heritage Month. As the only Latina on the Board of Supervisors, I am proud to represent the many beautiful, diverse communities of District 7 at City Hall. In this year’s celebration at City Hall, our theme is “Unidos por Nuestra Diversidad; United by Our Diversity,” and that is exactly what we are in District 7. District 7 is home to a breadth of diversity in age, race, gender identity, and more, but we are all brought together to enjoy all our District has to offer.
This past month, my team and I have been across the District celebrating our diversity; from a merchant walk in the Inner Sunset, to Neighborfests in Sunnyside, Ingleside, and more, to a neighborhood cleanup in West Portal. As we enter the Fall months, I hope you join me for more community events and initiatives to make District 7 safer, cleaner, and more accessible for all.

Supervisor Melgar was awarded a Climate Champion award by SF Climate Emergency Coalition along with Supervisors Mandelman and Mar. Supervisor Melgar was honored for her work authoring the Ban on Gas-Powered Landscaping Equipment.
“She constructed it carefully. She kept her eye on equity and built the ban in consultation with landscapers, owners, equipment vendors and independent contractors and their workers,” said Nancy Haber of 350 San Francisco.

YOUTH COUNCIL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
The District 7 Youth Council (D7YC) is made up of students of San Francisco’s District 7. Participating on the Youth Council trains participants in leadership, facilitation, policy research, event planning, and community organizing. They propose projects to address issues in the district, draft proposed legislation, and review legislation proposed by the Supervisor that affects youth concerns.
You must be a high school student and live or attend school in District 7.
Troop 88 was started in a garage, while the Forest Hill neighborhood was being built. The cornerstone of that neighborhood is the spectacular Maybeck-designed Clubhouse. Since the Clubhouse’s completion, it has been the site of weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, graduations -- and, every Wednesday, a collection of scouts in uniform.
As a “thank you” to the neighborhood, Troop 88 will host a street celebration in front of the Clubhouse, on October 15, 2022, from noon - 4 p.m., to celebrate its centennial. Young children and teens, and their parents, are encouraged to come, talk to a uniformed scout, and play simple carnival games. The boys and girls (yes, girls are in BSA scouts and taking on leadership positions!) of Troop 88 will lead the event in true scout style, which will feature the games, introduction to scout skills, and a display of 100 years of memorabilia. All 200 of our Eagle alums or their descendants have been invited, with the hope that every era will be represented. Please join troop 88 and celebrate.
SF RAIN READY
No system, however, can handle the heaviest of storms. Now more than ever, we are getting a hint of what climate change may bring in cities across the country. While we can’t stop climate change, together, we can adapt to it.
Sandbags are a portable and effective solution to deflect water and minimize flood damage. This past July, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) picked up the sandbags that had been delivered to your neighborhood last fall. With the rainy season upon us, SFPUC crews will be dropping off pallets of sandbags to your neighborhood on Tuesday, October 4 or Wednesday, October 5, in the following intersection:
Corner of Urbano/Victoria Streets (south side)
Also you can apply for a Floodwater Grant to flood-proof your property with up to $100k reimbursement. For example, if you have sewer backups on your property when it rains, install a backflow preventer eligible through the Grant.
Please visit the webpage at sfpuc.org/rainreadysf to take advantage of programs and resources to help minimize damage on your property due to rains.
JFK DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS
The JFK Promenade is getting a glow-up to become an even more welcoming space for all visitors—complete with vibrant decorative paint celebrating Golden Gate Park. On Monday, August 29th, work begins to transform the road into a promenade by removing old roadway striping to make way for decorative painting to begin. Crews will be out on JFK between 6th and 10th avenues and at JFK/ Kezar drives, grinding away the old roadway markings. You might see some dust from this work, but we’ll direct Promenade visitors around the construction areas with cones, and thoroughly sweep up afterward. We expect the grinding work to take approximately three weeks to complete. After that, these two decorative works—one at 8th Ave, and one at Kezar—will soon be welcoming you to the Promenade. We appreciate your patience as we continue the transformation of JFK!
