? Taking a stand on Muni fare increases

Last Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted overwhelmingly for our resolution to oppose MUNI fare increases planned by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA). Our Resolution was in response to the MTA raising fares by 10% on the majority of MUNI riders for the next two years despite the current serious economic uncertainty for MUNI riding San Franciscans.

The MTA Board will vote on their budget that includes fare increases on Tuesday, April 21 even though the City and County of San Francisco and the County Transportation Authority have already pushed their budget process back to cope with the financial repercussions of the crises.

The MTA’s proposed budget includes fare increases across the board, including seniors and disabled San Franciscans and our monthly and single rider passes. According to data from MTA, 31% of riders that purchase the senior single-ride passes and 59% of riders that purchase the disabled single ride pass are low income and are still expected to see fare increases.

We should be doing everything possible to support our operators and riders during this crucial time and that includes a fare freeze. Our office is committed to continuing to improve our public transit system without putting the burden on the backs of riders and operators. Our office continues to advocate for state and federal support for MUNI and we co-sponsored a Resolution urging continued support for state and federal funding and regulatory relief for the MTA during budget declines due to COVID-19. But right now we shouldn’t be asking everyday San Franciscans to bear the burden and pay to maintain MUNI service.

The Board of Supervisors has overwhelmingly agreed that we should not be raising fares at this time. It is a crucial time to reach out to the MTA Board of Directors by emailing them at MTABoard@sfmta.com by 5 pm today (Monday) to make sure your voice is heard.

If you want to ensure your comment about MUNI fare increases is received by the MTA Board of Directors in advance of their meeting on Tuesday, you can send an email to MTABoard@sfmta.com by 5 pm today, April 20 or call (415) 646-4470.

You can also watch the MTA Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday at 1 pm (via SFGovTV) at www.sfgovtv.org

We encourage you to send an email by 5 pm today, but in addition to that email, you can also call in for PUBLIC COMMENT at (888) 808-6929/ Access Code: 9961164

? Delivering 200 Gallons of Hand Sanitizer to SF Homeless Shelters, Jails, and MUNI Operators

Last Monday, our office teamed up with UC Berkeley scientists Abrar Abidi and Yvonne Hao as well as volunteers to deliver 500 bottles of hand sanitizer to MUNI operators. Despite promises, operators have not been provided with adequate supplies for their essential work. Monday’s delivery was part of arobust effort to address the most vulnerable  at a time when hours matter. In less than a month, we have delivered over 200 gallons of hand sanitizer to SF homeless shelters, jails, and MUNI operators, with plans to ramp up distribution to every vulnerable person until the city steps in to fully meet the need. We will continue to distribute more hand sanitizer to locations in District 5.

? Muni Core Service Plan Now in Effect

The MTA has cut bus routes across the district and is now operating 17 Muni core routes from 5 a.m. – 10 p.m., plus expanded evening-late night or Owl service. According to MUNI, they are making these changes to ensure that the limited resources they have used are to provide service for essential trips on the busiest lines with the highest demand with adequate space for passengers.

Our office has been in constant contact with the MTA to advocate for the return of the 5 and the 43. We understand that these are key routes to Kaiser Permanente and St. Mary’s Hospital along with grocery stores and other essential businesses. If you are having any issues getting where you need to go, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office at PrestonStaff@SFgov.org. It is important that we make sure SFMTA hears from everyone affected by the route changes and we are committed to making sure that is the case.
