Dear Neighbors and Community, 

I hope you are all doing well! 

As February unfolds, we proudly embark on a journey to celebrate Black History Month- a time to honor the remarkable achievements, resilience, and contributions of the Black community throughout history. 

As we pay homage to the legacy of Black leaders who have left an indelible mark on history, let us also commit ourselves to the ongoing work of creating a world where diversity is celebrated, justice prevails, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

I wish you a month filled with inspiration, education, and a renewed commitment to unity.  I invite you to join us at City Hall in our office (Room 282) for our annual District 10 Black History Month Reception.

I also want to mark the joy and celebrations that are approaching with the start of Lunar New Year on February 10th. I wish you a Lunar New Year filled with joy, health, and prosperity. Happy Year of the Dragon!

District 10 Office Updates

• Dec. 5 - We have worked for decades to decrease tobacco usage and to try to end nicotine addiction by banning flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes targeting young people. San Francisco overwhelmingly voted against e-cigarettes in 2019 with over 81% of the votes, but we know there are tobacco retailers that continue to violate our city laws by selling banned products online to San Francisco residents. That is why I am proud to stand with City Attorney David Chiu and our community members to send a strong message to retailers that they cannot continue violating our local laws, and this is why we are suing three companies that continue to target our young people. 

• Dec. 8 -  We visited the King Makers class at Starr King Elementary School here in Potrero Hill. These young men talked about success and the elements needed to become successful. Big shout out to Mr. McClendon and our young Kings for allowing us to come in and participate!

• Dec. 16 - An Incredible holiday event and toy giveaway took place at the Bayview Opera House! It was a wonderful experience, and it was heartening to see families come together and enjoy the festivities.

• Dec. 22 - Another successful year of Regalitos at Mission Education Center! It's always so much fun to help the kids with their batteries and electronics.

• Dec. 22 - Another successful giveaway in community at Herz Playground. A heartfelt appreciation to J&J Community Resource Center, Greater Life Church, Rec and Park, and the entire Sunnydale and Vis Valley Community for their involvement.

• Dec. 23 - There was a great turnout for the Bayview Winter Wonderland, including an appearance from Santa. Such a great community event for all ages.

• Jan. 8 - I was honored to attend tonight's African American Reparations Advisory Committee meeting at City Hall. Gratitude to the entire committee for their unwavering dedication—acknowledging the injustices faced by Black San Franciscans and diligently proposing tangible solutions to enhance outcomes. While there is more work ahead, a solid foundation has been laid! Thank you for your commitment
• Jan. 11 - Had a fantastic evening celebrating the 15th anniversary of Coleman Advocates' community work, championing justice for people of color and our most marginalized communities. Their impactful work and voice are needed now more than ever.
• Jan. 16 - Thank you Our Revolution for organizing the Education for All Town Hall with Congresswoman Barbara Lee and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond here in District 10 at the Bayview Opera House. We need to elect leaders that will fight for education for all of our children. That means doing everything we can to keep schools from closing and making sure that all of our children can thrive in the education system.
• Jan. 17 -At the inaugural Community Steering Committee meeting (at the Southeast Community Center). The committee is charged with developing the Community Emissions Reduction Plan (CERP) for Bayview and the Southeast Sector of the City. I want to thank the Marie Harrison Foundation (Arieann) and the Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates (Dalila), for being the co-lead organizations and persons for the work. I want to also thank BAAQMD and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for working with community on this.
• Jan. 25 - I am humbled by the amount of City and CBO partners that showed up to our town hall report back around the District 10 Safety Plan, here at the Southeast Community Center. Each one committed to the goal of a safe neighborhood.  Everyone committed to their different roles. Thank you to all who came out and continue to do the very important work of changing lives and saving lives!
• Jan. 26 - Chinese Hospital has been a community anchor in Chinatown and in San Francisco for over 125 years providing culturally competent healthcare to the Chinese community. Newsweek ranked Chinese Hospital as one of the top hospitals in the nation. Today, we celebrated the new Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees to continue the great work in our community throughout the year.
• Jan. 26 - Our families build generational wealth by having property to pass down within the family, so it’s important to know what state laws are in effect. Thank you Assessor Torres for doing this workshop in Visitacion Valley with our seniors and providing information about Prop 19.
• Jan. 27 - I want to congratulate Dr. Karwanna Irving and her husband Rell for launching a fully accredited Bayview College University; Redefining success in business and education. A big congratulations to today’s awardees! This is big for community and I am proud to have celebrated this at the Ruth Williams Opera House in Bayview.
