Dear Neighbors and Community,Â
I hope you are all doing well!Â
June has been an eventful and busy month. We are almost at the end of the budget season and I want to thank all of our community partners and advocates for their work and advocacy. We will continue to fight to ensure that all needs are met and we continue to thrive as a city. We will always fight to keep everyone whole and to support our most vulnerable populations.
We had a huge win for community this month with opening the District 10 Community Market. The D10 Community Market is a brand new 4,000 square-foot, grocery market that offers food insecure residents a wide selection of free groceries. The market also operates as a community connector of services for low-income families. We are extremely grateful for all of the community who came together to make this a reality, and for the partnerships with the Human Services Agency and Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services. This is more than a market place, this is a hub that will strengthen our community!

Another beautiful day in community was celebrating the renaming of Visitacion Valley Playground to Yik Oi Huang Peace & Friendship Park in honor of Grandma Yik Oi Huang. This is a testament that community can and will come together for each other. Thank you Sasanna Yee and the late Ronald Colthirst for initiating and making this idea a reality.
On day one, right after being sworn in, I received the tragic news about Grandma Huang and I visited her and her family the next day. I met her granddaughter Sasanna Yee who has been inspirational and resilient by uplifting the community and her Grandma’s legacy over the last few years. We know Grandma Huang’s legacy will live on here in San Francisco.

Yik Oi Huang Peace & Friendship Park Renaming - June 15, 2024

There were multiple successful Juneteenth Celebrations across the city this year and I'm so grateful for the organizers and community members who dedicated their time and resources to make these events happen.
From the parade down market street, to amazing community events right here in the district, to a beautiful event in the Fillmore, there was nothing but love and fellowship.
Understanding and celebrating Juneteenth holds profound importance and I'm thrilled that out city is embracing this significant holiday.Â

District 10 Office Updates
|
- May 29 - I had a great time celebrating the work of the Samoan Community Development Center’s (SCDC) Sustaining Pasifika Engagement, Advocacy and Knowledge (SPEAK 1) Program end of the year celebration. The work of the interns was inspiring and their research in the community is appreciated!
- May 31 - Early Juneteenth kick off with the students, school leaders and families, at Visitacion Valley Elementary School.
- June 3 - Another great Family Day in Vis Valley/Sunnydale! Honoring the memory of Dr. Ruth Jackson; continuing to build community!
- June 8 - A beautiful day riding down Market Street for the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Parade and celebration.
- June 11 - We passed the Language Access Ordinance amendments on final reading as well as the resolution affirming San Francisco’s commitment to language access. These amendments mark a significant step forward in ensuring that our community members have equitable access to essential services, regardless of the language they speak.
A huge thank you to everyone especially the Language Access Network, SOMCAN, Immigrant Rights Commission, and the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs who supported and advocated for this crucial change. Together, we’re building a more inclusive and accessible future for all in San Francisco.

- June 14 - Had an amazing time at the SF Black Wall Street Blackprint Gala, celebrating community leaders and black excellence.
- June 17 - It was great to attend the kick-off event for the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Program here in San Francisco this summer. I was fortunate enough to attend an HBCU for my undergraduate experience and it literally saved my life. We want our young people to be able to have that experience and culture right at home. Thank you to the Dream Keeper Initiative and USF for housing our interns and for your partnership in this work.Â
- June 18 - It is with great pride and admiration that we honored Dr. Mose Thornton today at the board. Dr. Thornton served the Bayview Hunters Point community for over 34 years at the Southeast Community Health Center. Dr. Thornton’s contributions to the field of surgery and his unwavering commitment to excellence serve as an inspiration to all. His dedication to patient care, surgical innovation, and mentorship has left an indelible mark on our community.
- June 22 - Had a beautiful morning attending the Candlestick Point SRA Oral History Project at the Candlestick Community Garden. Passing down the stories of our history orally was all our ancestors and elders had. It’s important to keep tradition alive.
- June 22 - The US for Us - Unite the City Basketball Tournament was a big hit. This is kicking off weeks of community balling together for peace. Come out to India Basin Courts and enjoy some hoop and community fun!
- June 25 -Â Bittersweet honoring and celebrating the retirement of the great Dr. Tamitrice Rice-Mitchell. Thank you so much for 37 years of commitment to SFUSD and mostly to our babies!

 SFMTA:
Beginning this Friday, June 28 the 19 Polk route’s outbound terminal will return to the stop at Galvez and Robinson avenues, near 451 Galvez Avenue. This change will return the layover to the location to where the 19 Polk terminated prior to August 2023.Â
As you may remember, in August 2023, the SFMTA moved the 19 Polk’s outbound terminal location to improve the layover location for operators. We are grateful to OCII for allowing operators to use their restroom facilities and for working to improve the streetlights on Galvez Avenue, which has made this return to the Galvez Avenue terminal location possible.Â
Functionally, this will mean that riders can get on and off the 19 Polk as they did prior to August 2023.Â
- For those who currently use the stop at Galvez and Robinson avenues : you may continue to get on and off the 19 Polk at this stop. Starting June 28, when the 19 Polk pulls into the Galvez Avenue stop, operators will then take their break (instead of operators then waiting at Donahue Street and Innes Avenue to take their break). When the bus departs the Galvez Avenue stop, the 19 Polk will continue inbound toward downtown.Â
- For those who currently use the Donahue Street and Innes Avenue stop : you may continue to get on and off the 19 Polk at this stop. Starting June 28, the 19 Polk will no longer hold at this stop as operators take their break. Instead, the bus will continue inbound toward downtown after letting riders on and off at this stop.Â
Once this change is implemented, we will remove the existing portable restroom at Donahue Street and Innes Avenue. Because of the urgency we have heard from community members in making this change, it is happening in advance of planned citywide service changes in August 2024. That means that arrival predictions via NextMuni and third-party apps will be less reliable temporarily. This data should be more accurate after this terminal change is reflected in comprehensive systems update in August.Â
