Dear Neighbors and Community,Â
Over the last two weeks, we've had BIG WINS for District 10 to celebrate!
When I became the District 10 Supervisor, I wanted to make sure that our community had resources that were severely lacking including:
- A quality grocery store in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood to access fresh food and groceries
- Robust merchant corridors throughout District 10 to support our local economy (3rd Street has had the most new small business grand openings over the last two years)
- Community spaces to gather, learn, and celebrate the legacy of the communityÂ
- Open spaces for community to gather and enjoy
Here are some highlights in case you missed it:Â
- Southeast Community Center Grand Opening
- Lucky Bayview Grocery Store Grand Opening
- Leland Avenue Light Ups in Visitacion Valley
- Skyline Terrace Celebration in Potrero HIll
- First Historic Landmark Designation in Visitacion Valley

Southeast Community Center at 1550 Evans Avenue
On October 22, we celebrated the grand opening of the 1550 Evans: Southeast Community Center! A community promise that has finally been fulfilled.
For years we fought to make sure that the Bayview community benefitted from having the sewage plant in our neighborhood. The promise was made for an education facility as one component of benefit for community, and a place for community to gather. The Southeast Community Facility at 1800 Oakdale served as that for decades. Now, with the new Sewer System Improvement Program, a state-of-the-art community center and education center was promised at 1550 Evans. The fulfillment of prior promises and commitments to community, is one of the things we have been working hard to realize in our office. It is exciting to see one of those promises come to fruition.
We will make sure the activities at the community center benefit everyone in the Bayview, and we are looking forward to the new state of the art education facility, that will lead to tangible career opportunities right in our own neighborhood. This is one investment centered around community and we look forward to the day the doors officially open. I want to thank the Big 6: Dr. Espanola Jackson, Elouise Westbrook, Shirley Jones, Alex Pitcher, Harold Madison, and Ethel Garlington, for laying the foundation to make this possible.

Lucky Bayview Grocery Store Grand Opening
The Lucky Bayview store has finally opened in Bayview Hunters Point at the Bayview Plaza on Third Street and Evans Avenue on October 26. This grocery store has quality produce, meats, and necessities for all residents who have historically lived in a food desert. Our office has been working closely with the community and the Office of Economic Workforce Development to bring a supermarket to the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. We will keep delivering on our commitments to bring more fresh food and grocery stores to District 10. Thank you community and our partners for making this happen!

Leland Avenue Lights Up in Visitacion Valley
On the evening of October 26, Leland Avenue officially became part of the Light Up the City Project. The community and our small businesses have been working on these improvements for Leland Avenue and we hope that this will bring more foot traffic and businesses to our local merchants. We want the rest of San Francisco to come visit Leland Avenue, have a meal, get some coffee and explore the Visitacion Valley neighborhood. Thank you Kellie McCord of Mission Blue and Manny Yekutiel of Manny’s for making this happen!

Skyline Terrace Celebration in Potrero Hill
On October 19, we joined community members to celebrate the grand opening of the Carolina Green Space: Skyline Terrace Community Space and Garden located on Carolina Street and 22nd Street in Potrero Hill.
The median on Carolina Street, between 22nd and 23rd Streets, is owned by the City and remains one of the biggest patches of Green Space left on Potrero Hill. In 1967, a group of self-named neighbors (the "Potrero Hill Landscapers") poured a cement pad as a place to sit at the north end, creating the first community gathering space. Until 2008, this area was maintained by the City and was a beautiful and unique place used and enjoyed by the neighborhood. After the City’s maintenance ended, the area had become severely overgrown with vegetation.
The newly renovated area will provide the neighborhood with a much-needed green amenity and a welcoming, cohesive meeting spot or destination point for any and all visitors to the Skyline Terrace of the Carolina Green Space and will allow for gatherings or community events to occur. We are proud to be a part of this community initiative to create additional green space in District 10. Thank you Cathryn Blum and neighbors of the Carolina Green Space for making this happen!Â

First Historic Landmark in Visitacion Valley!
On November 2, the Historic Preservation Committee unanimously voted to support designating the St. James Presbyterian Church in Visitacion Valley as a San Francisco historical landmark. The is the very first historic landmark for the neighborhood and definitely not the last.Â
In partnership with the Visitacion Valley History Project, community members worked on identifying preservation projects and addressed the neighborhood’s under-representation in the city’s official inventory of historic buildings. Residents and community members voted for St. James Presbyterian Church.
St. James Presbyterian Church was established in 1908, in the first few years of Visitacion Valley’s history as a city neighborhood. After outgrowing its modest original building, the congregation commissioned renowned master-architect and engineer, Julia Morgan to design the current church. Designed in Arts and Crafts styles, the current St. James Presbyterian Church building was dedicated on March 13, 1923 and will celebrate its centennial next year in 2023. Thank you to the Visitacion Valley community, Pastor Fernando De Rosario Jr., and SF Heritage for making this possible!
