March 16, 2020 - COVID-19 ALERT: Bay Area Shelter in Place

Dear Neighbors and Community,

COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus is in San Francisco. At the time of this email, there are 40 confirmed cases in San Francisco.

Our number one goal at this time is to make sure everyone is safe and healthy. Mayor Breed along with six other Bay Area counties have announced a MANDATORY SHELTER-IN-PLACE that will be in effect midnight tonight and last until April 7. It may be extended depending on recommendations from public health officials.

PLEASE STAY AT HOME.

The most important thing you can do is to remain at home as much as possible. Necessary government functions and essential stores will remain open. There is no need to rush out for food or supplies, as these stores will remain open. If you need to leave your home for essential needs, please practice social distancing and remain at least 6 feet away from another person.

This is a critical intervention to reduce harm from the spread of coronavirus in our community.

We have gathered a list of City resources here for students, families, businesses, and community in this alert.

Stay Home & Prevent the Spread

On Monday March 16, San Francisco with Health Officers from the Bay Area announced a Public Health Order that requires residents to stay home except for essential needs. This starts on March 17.

For full details and questions about this mandatory shelter-in-place, please read here.

What to do

The City issued a Public Health Order requiring people to stay home except for essential needs.

Vulnerable populations must stay home. Everyone should stay home except to get food, care for a relative or friend, get necessary health care, or go to an essential job.

It is OK to go outside for walks if you are not in a group.

This order is in effect until April 7.

It may be extended depending on recommendations from public health officials.

Read the full Public Health Order here.

Why are we doing this?

This is a critical intervention to reduce harm from the spread of the coronavirus in our community. This is a mandatory order.

All Bay Area Health Officers observed quickly mounting cases and serious illnesses across the region.

Now is the time to do everything we can to prevent the situation from getting much worse in a matter of days or weeks. Every hour counts. We need and appreciate the cooperation of everyone who lives and works in San Francisco to act immediately.

While this news may feel alarming, it is a necessary step to prevent a worsening situation. The patterns of the virus around the world, and in our own state, tell us that moving right now to maximize social distancing and restrict people gathering is the best way to fight the virus and save lives.

If everyone works together, we should be able to adjust to the new rules over the next few weeks.

We know that there will be a lot of questions and concerns at the beginning of this new regimen. This is a major change being taken to protect public health. Please be patient and kind to one another. Together, we will get through this, and our community’s health will be protected.

How long will we stay home?

This goes into effect on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. It is currently set to last for 3 weeks through Tuesday, April 7, 2020.

We want to be sure the Order is in place for only as long as necessary, and the Health Officer will be closely monitoring the situation every day in order to determine what adjustments make sense.

What can I do? What's open?

These essential services will remain open:

  • City/County government services: Police stations, fire stations, hospitals/clinics and healthcare operations, jails, courts, garbage/sanitation, transportation (including Muni), utilities (water, power and gas), and city offices
  • Gas stations
  • Pharmacies
  • Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery from restaurants
  • Hardware stores/plumbers
  • Banks
  • Community benefit organizations on a case-by-case basis
  • Laundromats/laundry services

What's closed?

  • Dine-in restaurants
  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Entertainment venues
  • Gyms and fitness studios

What can't I do?

You cannot engage in group activities in person with others.

You cannot have dinner parties. You cannot invite friends over to your home to hang out.

You cannot go to bars or nightclubs.

You cannot go to a nail salon or get your hair cut by a stylist or barber.

You cannot go shopping for non-essential goods.

You cannot take unnecessary trips on public transport or in your car or motorbike.

Where does this apply?

This is in effect across the Bay Area, including in Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, and Alameda Counties and the City of Berkeley.

Remember, these are the best ways for all San Franciscans to reduce their risk of getting sick, and preventing COVID-19:
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you are sick.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Try alternatives to shaking hands, like a wave.
  • If you have recently returned from a country, state or region with ongoing COVID-19 infections, monitor your health and follow the instructions of public health officials.
  • There is no recommendation to wear masks at this time to prevent yourself from getting sick.
You can also prepare for the disruption caused by an outbreak:
  • Work from home if that is possible for your job, and your employer.
  • Make sure you have a supply of all essential medications for your family.
  • Prepare a child care plan if you or a caregiver are sick.
  • Make arrangements about how your family will manage school closures.
  • Plan for how you can care for a sick family member without getting sick yourself.
  • Take care of each other and check in by phone with friends, family and neighbors that are vulnerable to serious illness or death if they get COVID-19.
  • Keep common spaces clean to help maintain a healthy environment for you and others. Frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned regularly with disinfecting sprays, wipes or common household cleaning products.

School Closure & Food Distribution

SFUSD is closing schools to students beginning Monday, March 16 through April 7. Staff will be working part of this time to prepare and train on how to educate and support community health during this epidemic.

During this period, all school building activities for students, including school day instruction and extracurricular activities, childcare, before and after school services, health services, and enrichment will be canceled. The district is exploring with the City and County of San Francisco and community organizations what it can do to support students and families while schools are closed for the two weeks before spring break.

Public health officials recommend that families who need to make arrangements for childcare during closure should try to avoid leaving children with older relatives and others who are more vulnerable to complications from COVID-19. Students should stay home and minimize social contact as much as possible to keep their adult family members safe.

Lunches and other meals students normally receive at school will be available for pick up at distribution sites throughout the city.

On Tuesday, March 17, 8 sites will be open 9-10 a.m. On March 18, 14 will be open, and from March 19 and on 18 sites will be open Monday through Friday 9-10 a.m. to pick-up breakfast, lunch, supper, fresh fruit, vegetables and milk to take home. See locations and schedules below.

No identification or proof of school enrollment is required, but a child must be present. Shelf-stable meals will also be available. Families will not need to enter the school building for pick-up.

Details about food distribution centers are available on the SFUSD website.
