September has been an incredibly busy month! We’ve been hard at work making our community better, and over the past month there’s been so much to celebrate. Here’s a quick look at just some of the work, events, and celebrations that have happened these last 30 days as well as upcoming events!

I introduced a resolution condemning a proposed rule change by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that would end categorical eligibility for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and cause more than 3,000,000 people nationwide to be more food insecure. SNAP is known as CalFresh in California. According to the San Francisco Food Security Task Force in 2018, 226,520 people in San Francisco are residents with an income below 200% of the federal poverty level and are at high risk of food insecurity. We should be sparing no expense in making sure our community is fed, especially given the material wealth we see all around us in this city and country. I’m happy to announce that my resolution was co-sponsored by 7 of my colleagues and passed unanimously at the Board of Supervisors on September 24, 2019. |

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Advertisement Warnings
|
|
|
On September 10, 2019, I introduced an ordinance along with Supervisor Vallie Brown to require 10% health warnings on soda and sugar-sweetened beverage advertisements. Our new proposed ordinance will require a 10% warning label instead of the original 20% warning label that was struck down earlier this year by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals about the health effects of sugar consumption on soda and sugar-sweetened beverage advertisements so that our residents can make an informed decision about their consumption. |

Hunter's Point Shipyard Update
|
|
|
Aside from calling for independent oversight of clean-up protocols with UC Berkeley and UCSF, our office has been in discussions with the US Navy, the EPA and community, pushing hard to ensure that the Navy cleans the Shipyard right away! We have been calling for the retesting of Parcel G and deeper level of testing at Parcel A to ensure current residents are safe. Our 100% focus is clean up and not cover up.
In addition, we have made sure that residents that actually live on the Shipyard, have a chance to work directly with the Navy to learn what they will do to make sure the Shipyard is clean. These residents have been on tours and have been provided with updates every step of the way about what the plans are for clean up from the Navy.
Lastly, I have joined the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, in order to effectively learn how to make sure we protect our community from toxins and pollutants in our air.

Latinx Heritage Month Honoree: Yolanda Gutierrez

I had the privilege of honoring Yolanda “Yolee” Gutierrez at the Board of Supervisors’ Latinx Heritage Month celebration! Yolee is a one of a kind community activist who goes above and beyond for the people she serves and truly has a big heart. She has helped our families and communities in District 10 heal and get through traumatic situations. She is a mother, sister, activist, community leader and so much more. Yolee deserves our acknowledgement and much more for her dedication and commitment to service!

SF Close the Camps Rally - 9.16.19

What kind of person/people would systematically separate people? Our national administration that has no moral compass or compassion for families to separate babies and children from their families. I stood in solidarity with with my colleagues and our communities to say that we must mobilize, organize, fight and vote in order to change what is happening at the federal level. Let’s get Trump out of here! Close the Camps! Keep families together!

Sabrina’s story of courage, hard work, commitment to the Club, and determination to achieve and succeed make her the perfect National Youth of the Year. Congratulations Sabrina! HOPE SF Update & Groundbreaking

|
9.25.19 - We celebrated the Hope SF Block 6 groundbreaking in Sunnydale. The Sunnydale community is the largest public housing site in San Francisco and one of the most isolated for generations. We are elated to see the 167 new units and what’s to come. Our office will continue to push for more affordable homes across the city to help make San Francisco more affordable. Stay tuned this Tuesday for preference legislation to be introduced for Hope SF families to ensure that families who once lived in dilapidated and inequitable housing will have a preference to return to the newly revitalized housing that we are building for public housing residents in the district.

Visitacion Valley - Grand Opening

9.28.19 - On the last Saturday of September, we celebrated the Grand Opening of Mission Blue on 144 Leland Street in Visitacion Valley. This is more than a coffee shop, but a place for community to gather and build relationships. Thank you Kellie and Ken for opening this new business right here on the Leland Street corridor! More vibrancy on the way for Vis Valley!

Battle of the Bay
9.21.19 - I kick-started the day with Recology for the Battle for the Bay, a two-city contest — San Francisco and Oakland — to see which city can pick up the most trash and bring out the most volunteers on Coastal Cleanup Day. We need to continue to keep our cities clean including curbing illegal dumping in our own neighborhoods.

9.20.19 - I attended my first Citizenship Day Celebration at City College’s Chinatown Campus. Congratulations to all of the Chinese immigrants who are now U.S. citizens.

9.14.19 - I celebrated the first inaugural joint Latinx Heritage Month and Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Celebration put on by the Community Youth Center, Joseph Lee Rec Center, El Centro Bayview, Wu Yee Children’s Services, and Edgewood Center for Youth and Families. This is how we continue to build relationships across all of our communities.

San Francisco Fire Department
Fire Ops Training
9.14.19 - I was up early in the morning at the Fire Ops Training with my colleagues and the SF Fire Department on Treasure Island. We crawled through a burning building, performed CPR in a speeding ambulance, and used the jaws of life to rescue someone. This has helped me experience the hard work that firefighters do every single day to protect our communities. Thank you SFFD for opening up your training grounds for the first time in 20 years for our elected officials and City family.

Bayview Mural Rededication
Tuzuri Watu - 3rd/Palou
9.14.19 - I was honored to speak at the rededication of the Tuzuri Watu mural on Third and Palou to honor the history and people of the Bayview. Thank you to EDOT, Precita Eyes, SFAC, Nate and Public Glass, original artist Brooke Pancher, Yano Rivera (the Mural Doctor who restored the mural) and the many others who fought for the funding to remove the graffiti and restore this Bayview treasure!

Historic Black Colleges and Universities Fair

9.9.19 - A counselor once asked me what I was going to do with my life and I said that I was going to go to college and be successful. That counselor told me that there was no way that I was going to college and there was no way that I was going to be successful. When I talk to young people, I tell them that story all of the time. As a youth, I had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia with my mentor Philmore Graham for a leadership conference that exposed me to young Black college men who were doing great things. The young men had everything that I wanted and when I asked how to get it, they said education. That is why as an alum from Morris Brown College, it is so important for me to continue to advocate and expose education opportunities to our youth and why it was so important for City Hall to have a Historic Black Colleges and University Fair.

San Francisco Public Bank - D10 Forum

9.5.19 - We’ve been advocating for a Public Bank and I have co-sponsored legislation with Supervisor Fewer to establish a Public Bank in San Francisco and worked with Assemblymember David Chiu to push for AB857, which will help San Francisco continue our work to establish a true public bank. In collaboration with the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition we participated in a Public Bank Forum in the Bayview. Currently, AB857 is on the Governor’s desk awaiting his signature and needs your help to petition Governor Newsom to sign on.

9.4.19 - In partnership with Rec and Park, we unveiled the new field at the Potrero Hill Recreation Center. I remember as a youth, I played in this field so it is great to see this field revitalized for our communities.

Walk & Roll to School Day is October 2!
|

On October 2, 2019, thousands of kids at schools across San Francisco will walk, scoot, and bicycle to school as part of International Walk & Roll to School Day. In District 10, Supervisor Walton will be walking with students to his former elementary school El Dorado - meeting spot will be at 7:40am at 2450 Visitacion Avenue at the corner of Mansell.
From pre-k to high school, this event builds yearlong excitement around getting to school on foot, bicycle, or scooter. Parents, guardians, and caregivers: pledge to walk to school with your student and you’ll be entered into a drawing for free family admission to the Exploratorium. Word. A Cafe located on 5114 Third Street between Revere & Shafter, opened in late October 2018 as a coffee shop serving espresso drinks, breakfast and lunch. The cafe closed during the summer of this year while converting to full restaurant and bar. Now, Word is offering lunch and dinner, with frequent special menus including hot panini sandwiches, soups and salads. The kitchen specializes in Southern cuisine including fresh baked pies and buttermilk biscuits, Cajun jambalaya, shrimp stompers and chili, washed down with locally brewed craft beers and innovative cocktails.
Word A Cafe sells books through a partnership with Christopher Books on Potrero Hill. Proceeds from special events — including Supervisor Walton’s stint as guest bartender last week — are donated to SF children’s literacy programs.
The cafe is open Wednesday and Thursday 11 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 10 pm. Weekend brunch will start up soon 10 am to 2 pm. And watch for frequent announcements of special art and music performances.

Host Homes
Our friends at the SF LGBT Center are starting their first-ever housing program and it’s called Host Homes. Host Homes is a community-driven solution to ending youth housing crisis that facilitates mutually beneficial pairing between San Francisco based hosts and young adult guests who need a safe place to stay while finding stable housing.
HOW IT WORKS: The SF LGBT Center is looking to recruit fantastic hosts who have a spare bedroom or private space that can be turned into a bedroom in their homes. Both host and guest will be carefully screened and a mutual pairing will be made that honors the lifestyles, values, and interests of the two in order to have a successful matching experience. The guest will stay in the host’s home for 3-12 months and will receive in-depth case management around searching for housing, education, and job opportunities while in the program that can lead to stable housing.

RFP #212 was published on OEWD’s website and contains 27 distinct economic development program areas from the Invest in Neighborhoods (IIN) division, totaling over $4.3 million in investments. - Applicants may submit multiple proposals if they want to be considered for funding under different program areas. Each proposal must designate a specific funding area under which it is to be considered (i.e. multiple programs should not be included in one proposal)

2020-2025 Community Development RFP Update
The Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) would like to share a few updates to the Request for Proposals (RFP) for its next five-year funding cycle of Community Development Services:
- We have published all received questions and answers related to this RFP on our website. Please click the link below to visit the webpage where you can download the question and answer document.
- n response to a request to clarify the different levels of service available under the Rental Housing Counseling strategy (within the Access to Housing program area), we have modified the strategy description to make it clearer to applicants that they must choose between two levels of service: they can provide either basic application assistance, housing case management services, or both. Please click the below link to visit the webpage where you can download the updated strategy description.
- MOHCD has also increased the maximum grant amounts available for applicants interested in applying for the Coordinating Agency roles under the Rental Housing Counseling, Homeownership Pre-Purchase, and Homeownership Post-Purchase strategies, all within the Access to Housing program area.
- Besides these two modifications to the Access to Housing program area, there are no other updates to the RFP.
- The application deadline is Friday, October 18, 2019 at 5:00 p.m.
