Friends and neighbors,
At long-last, the Trader Joe’s location at 555 Fulton will be open to the public on Friday, fulfilling a more than decades-long promise to the Hayes Valley and Western Addition residents for a neighborhood serving grocery store.Â
Opening Day is Friday, May 17 at 9:00 a.m., and daily store hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. The entrance to the market is on Laguna Street, and the underground parking garage can be accessed through Fulton Street.Â

Nearly 15 years ago, the City created special development rules to allow additional building capacity at 555 Fulton Street in exchange for allowing a neighborhood-serving grocery store. The 139 condominiums have been fully built and operational, but the promise of a grocery store sat unmet until now. When things still weren’t moving forward last year, we called for a hearing and engaged with all parties to make sure the store was on track to open.
We are happy to welcome this grocery store to District 5 as we continue our extensive work to address food insecurity, including urging the California State Legislature to provide supplemental CalFresh benefits, winning Halal Food Vouchers in the Tenderloin in the last budget cycle, advocating to bring a full-service grocery store to the Tenderloin, support for the Heart of the City Farmers Market in the face of displacement, delaying the abrupt closure of the Fillmore’s only full-scale grocery store, calling for the full restoration of funding for the crucial Market Match food program, and championing the Grocery Protection Act.
