District 11 Supervisor Chyanne Chen’s Internship Program offers an introduction to the work of a local government office, and a deeper understanding of public policy issues impacting San Francisco. This internship opportunity allows you to participate in the daily operations of the City and County of San Francisco, support Supervisor Chen and her staff in serving and advocating for District 11’s constituents, and develop your community service, policy, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Background
District 11 includes Excelsior, Ingleside, Oceanview, Merced Heights, Ingleside Heights, Mission Terrace, Outer Mission, Cayuga, and Crocker Amazon. Our district is ethnically diverse, with significant Asian and Latino populations, many working-class and immigrant families, a notable senior population, and San Francisco’s highest population of youth.
Supervisor Chen has lived in District 11 for over two decades. She immigrated to the United States from a small village in China at age 15 with her family. She attended Galileo High School, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis, obtained a master's degree from Cornell University, and is currently pursuing a doctorate. She is a mother to two daughters and a caregiver to her elderly parents.
Responsibilities
- Respond to constituent concerns and requests
- Research current events and policy issues that impact District 11 and its residents
- Collaborate with legislative staff on various projects and assignments
- Provide administrative support in day-to-day office operations
- Participate in community events
Skills & Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with keen attention to detail
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excels in both teamwork and independent work
- Proactive and driven to seek learning and growth opportunities
- Strong passion for public policy and community service
Desired Skills
- Experience or openness to working in a professional office environment
- Proficiency in verbal and/or written communication in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, or Tagalog
Time Commitment
- In-person shifts at San Francisco City Hall
- Shifts are generally scheduled in the mornings (9am-1pm) and afternoons (1-5pm)
- Opportunities available to participate in weekday evening and weekend events or meetings
- For Summer 2025, interns have the flexibility to start as early as May and finish as late as September, with opportunities to extend their internship beyond the summer term based on mutual interest and availability
